JOB SUMMARY: Under general supervision, performs skilled work in the operation of a variety of equipment and heavy equipment, including asphalt rollers, water trucks, dump trucks, ASL packers, street sweepers, roll-off, front load, and rear load refuse units in the Public Works Department. Essential Job FunctionsOperates a variety of heavy equipment in accordance with all safety regulations and procedures.Performs scheduled maintenance, repair, and service work on City streets, rights-of-ways, alleys, medians, storm water drainage systems, and retention basins; hauls, transports, loads and/or unloads various material and equipment associated with assigned projects.Assist with preparation of concrete base including setting wood forms and positioning steel; measure and pour concrete; finish concrete; remove wooden forms and backfill; clean site; spread loam. Drive to and from destinations as assigned by Supervisor.Maintains dirt roads, shoulders, constructing and maintaining temporary parking lots; performs asphalt repair and replacement; excavates, sweeps, dumps, rakes, spreads, and rolls/compacts asphalt; performs all forms of concrete form setting, concrete placement and concrete finishing related to street maintenance.Maintains heavy equipment by conducting daily safety inspections of equipment, cleans and performs routine maintenance work on trucks and equipment; identifies and reports mechanical problems requiring additional repair; performs load inspections to prevent hazardous waste spills or dangerous road conditions; performs general maintenance, welding, fabrication, and repair on City equipment as needed.Completes required daily logs and reports; hauls materials, and transports vehicles and equipment to job sites using various trucks; loads and unloads materials using power equipment; performs skilled construction, maintenance, and labor work; resurfaces and grades and shapes roads; aids in emergency and storm related activities.Performs a variety of Public Works Department manual labor tasks as assigned.Assists in providing training and direction to new employees as needed.Performs other duties as assigned. Education and ExperienceHigh School Diploma or equivalent.Three years’ experience driving trucks and operating construction and heavy equipment.Texas Class C Driver’s License. Knowledge and SkillsKnowledge of City policies and procedures.Safety standards and practices for construction sites, roadways, and heavy equipment.Traffic laws and rules involved in vehicle and equipment operation, as well as traffic control and flagging procedures.Hazards and precautions in using heavy equipment.Methods, materials, and practices of street and right-of-way maintenance, and asphalt repair.Proper use and maintenance of power tools, hand tools, equipment, machinery, and vehicles.Safe and efficient operation and maintenance of trucks and equipment according to standard operating and safety procedures.Making routine operating adjustments and repairs to assigned equipment.Following and effectively communicating verbal and written instructions.Providing quality customer service and stay calm during difficult customer situations.Developing and maintaining effective working relationships with other employees, leadership, and the public.Physical Demands / Work EnvironmentOperate a motor vehicle safely.Ability to sit, stand, walk long distances, kneel, crouch, stoop, and squat.Ability to lift 50 pounds.Exposure to cold, heat, construction, roadway, and other outdoor hazards.
