What are the responsibilities and job description for the Laboratory Technician position at City of Eustis?
The City of Eustis is seeking a trustworthy, responsible individual who, under the direction of the Lab Services Manager, performs skilled laboratory work involving the sampling, testing and analyzing of wastewater to evaluate the performance of the various wastewater treatment processes. The employee assists in the day-to-day operation of the laboratory and insures the accuracy of chemical and biological analyses. The employee performs tasks that require the application of independent judgment, based on sound scientific practices and procedures.
Examples of Machines, Tools and Equipment Used: Various tabletop testing and analyzing equipment, including CL2, TSS, pH, dissolved oxygen and ORP meters, ovens, furnaces, BOD incubators, water baths, autoclaves, spectrophotometer and discrete analyzer; and other laboratory equipment; City vehicle
Supervision Received: Lab Services Manager; Wastewater Superintendent
Other Job Functions:
Knowledge of laboratory procedures and equipment; knowledge of basic chemistry and mathematics as they relate to treatment plant operation; knowledge of qualitative and quantitative analysis; knowledge of the occupational hazards involved in treatment and disposal; knowledge of chain-of-custody procedures, dispatching and shipping techniques; knowledge of ethical and moral practices pertaining to wastewater sampling, testing and reporting. Knowledge of treatment plant operation is helpful, but not required.
Ability to analyze and evaluate test results; ability to maintain accurate record and reports; ability to make decisions in accordance with established procedures; ability to work well with others; ability to drive a vehicle; ability to work on call, as required, including nights, weekends and holidays; ability to remain at a city work shelter, before, during and after a hurricane or other storm or disaster, if asked
Skill in application of laboratory techniques.
Minimum Qualifications:
Associates Degree from an accredited college or university in Biology, Chemistry, Environmental Sciences or related field; or two (2) year experience in laboratory testing, with at least six (6) months in a NELAP Accredited Lab; valid Florida Driver’s License with an acceptable driving record is required. A demonstrated ability to read, speak, and write in English is a prerequisite for employment in this position. Wastewater Operator’s License desirable.
Working Hours:
Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Physical Demands:
This is continuous light work and occasional heavy work. Requires walking and standing; sitting for moderate periods of times; frequent stooping, reaching, bending; good finger/hand dexterity and hand/eye coordination; good eyesight; working in adverse weather conditions (heat, cold, rain, etc.) regularly; driving a vehicle.
Salary Information:
$18.9232 to $26.9227 per hour ($39,360.42 - $55,999.15 annually); EXCELLENT benefits (Note: See Benefits Tab for more information). Applicants should expect a starting salary of $18.9232 per hour. - Collects samples of raw, partially treated and untreated wastewater and by-products;
- Performs chemical, bacteriological and physical tests on the collected samples;
- Analyzes, evaluates and interprets test results to determine efficiency of plant process and conformity to local, state and federal requirements;
- Conducts follow-up testing to insure compliance;
- Submits data to Lab Services Manager;
- Maintains lab instruments and lab cleanliness;
- Maintains lab records for Florida Department of Health and the National Environmental Laboratory Accreditation Program (NELAP);
- Performs data entry in various computer spreadsheets, including Excel and Access;
- Maintains departmental records;
- Works on call during weekends and nights, when required.

- Assists in the preparation for and aftermath of a major emergency such as a hurricane or other storm or disaster, as needed
