What are the responsibilities and job description for the Graduate Engineer position at City of Friendswood?
PURPOSE OF THE JOB:
The Graduate Engineer is responsible for assisting the Director of Engineering, Deputy Director of Engineering, Project Managers, and Project Coordinator with engineering planning, design, and construction work to include: basic to complex engineering calculations, drafting using AutoCAD, reviewing and updating plans and specifications, providing engineering oversight and answers for construction projects, field construction verification with record drawings, geographic information system (GIS) data processing and preparation of maps and exhibits, hydrologic and hydraulic modeling and review of drainage reports and plans, and other various field and analytical assignments that require the expertise of an engineer in training.
WORK PERFORMED:
- Manage and oversee engineering tasks for multiple projects throughout planning, engineering design, and construction phases.
- Attend and represent engineering in project meetings with other department representatives and/or developers to assess engineering problems and discuss recommended solutions
- Prepare plans and specifications and project documents.
- Ensure technical accuracy, standard engineering practices, and inclusion of appropriate documentation on various reports and design projects.
- Perform engineering interpretation of specifications and drawings, help to recommend, and document design modifications, and coordinate with the design team.
- Aid developers, contractors, city staff and citizens on operational projects and projects in engineering design or planning stages.
- Act as liaison with external agencies such as TxDOT, Galveston and Harris County, local drainage districts, etc., that are affected by City of Friendswood engineering and/or construction projects
- Utilize AutoCAD to prepare standard details and engineering drawings and to aid in solving engineering problems.
- Utilize ArcGIS to prepare exhibits, maps, drawings, and to aid in solving engineering problems requiring geospatial solutions.
- Review engineering reports, specifications, infrastructure plans, drainage plans, profile sheets, general notes, and drainage calculations for the city's capital improvement projects and development projects.
- Solve complex hydraulic and hydrologic problems using HEC-HMS, HEC-RAS and PC-SWMM modeling software.
- including paving, subgrade stabilization, water line, sanitary sewer, lift stations, storm and drainage outfalls and detention basins at project sites ensuring compliance with contract specifications and approved plans
- Perform traffic studies and analysis
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
- Completion of a 4-year engineering degree or other ABET accredited program.
- 1-2 years of experience with civil engineering.
- Must have passed the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam or be eligible to take and pass the FE exam within one year of hire date.
- EIT (Engineer in Training) certification preferred.
KNOWLEDGE or SKILL PROFICIENCIES:
- Understands floodplain management concepts.
- Experience reading and interpreting CAD drawings.
- Proficiency with AutoCAD or and/or ArcGIS geospatial software is recommended.
- Excellent communication skills, both oral and written; must be able to review specifications, policies, procedures, and draft formal emails, letters, and reports.
- Ability to read and interpret codes, ordinances, specifications, and other schematic diagrams.
