What are the responsibilities and job description for the Occupational Health Nurse position at City of Goldsboro?
Performs responsible on-site nursing services to City of Goldsboro’s employees. Services include vaccinations, health screenings, referrals to providers, health and safety education, and drug testing. The Occupational Health Nurse also provides preliminary assessments of employees’ injuries and provides case management for workers’ compensation cases to assist with returning the employee back to work in a timely manner. Promotes a safe workplace environment with an overall goal of decreasing workplace illnesses and injuries. The job is performed under the supervision of the Director of Human Resources.
The work is medium work which requires exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 30 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. The work may require specific physical characteristic and abilities such as heightened strength, mobility, dexterity and full range of motion. The following additional physical abilities are also required: manual dexterity, hearing, mental acuity, reaching, repetitive motion, speaking, talking, visual acuity and walking.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
The work is generally performed in an office environment and involves everyday risks or discomforts which require normal safety precautions typical of such places as offices, meeting and training rooms, libraries, residences or commercial vehicles. Exposure to blood, and bodily fluids may be required. Additionally, exposure or potential exposure to hazardous waste, toxic/caustic chemicals, or fumes.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
- Leader of City of Goldsboro COVID task force.
- Blood Pressure and weight checks.
- Assess injured employees and provide first aid when needed.
- Recognizes and reacts appropriately to potential occupational emergency situations.
- Refer injured employees in need of medical care to the appropriate medical provider.
- Act as the city’s liaison between Workers Comp carrier and injured employees.
- Enter injuries on OSHA log and update log as needed.
- Plan, coordinate, deliver and provide wellness and health education programs.
- Assess employees with medical problems. Offer self-care advice and/or make physician referrals when appropriate.
- Provides case management for occupational and non-occupational health conditions.
- Records and documents information for department and city employee reports.
- Presents and promotes programs/activities to develop a safe and healthy workplace.
- Provides the city with a written summary of program activities monthly and annually.
- Assist employees seeking a personal physician.
- Provide and maintain American Herat Association CPR, First Aid and Automated External Defibrillator (AED) Training.
- Administer the Bloodborne Pathogens Program with Safety and Training.
- Coordination of Employee Assistance Program, referrals as needed.
- Perform random, pre-hire, for-cause, and post-accident drug screens and breath alcohol tests.
- Perform fingerstick glucose checks when needed.
- Administer Hepatitis vaccine, tetanus shot, flu vaccine, and TB skin test as needed.
- Provides assistance with finding Primary Care Provider and /or medical specialist when needed.
- One on One Confidential Counseling.
- Health Insurance Information source.
- Deliver Information regarding workplace injuries and bloodborne pathogens during new-employee orientation.
- Serves as a member of the city’s Wellness Committee.
- Coordinate Blood Drives for City Employees.
- Perform audiograms and administer Hearing Conservation Program.
- Performs FIT testing for N95 respirator as needed for required departments.
- Keeps current in trends and best practices in Occupational Health Nurse.
- Applies knowledge of principles of universal precautions. Routinely uses personal protective equipment and infection control barriers or devices to avoid risk of exposure to self and others.
- Completes continuing education and in-service programs to meet regulatory and job requirements as applicable requirements.
- Knowledge of City policies and procedures related to Personnel Policy and procedures.
- Keen interest and considerable knowledge of wellness and health promotion
- Considerable knowledge of occupational health procedures and practices.
- Ability to learn to operate screening equipment and tools.
- Ability to collaborate and maintain relationships with City employees and Human Resources staff.
- Ability to speak effectively in public to small and large audiences.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
- Graduate of an accredited school of professional nursing.
- Current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of North Carolina.
- At least 2 years of acute nursing experience.
