Hiring Range: $21.35 - $24.03 Hourly

Description:
Success in the Horticulture Division of parks and recreation requires a qualified, hardworking, and highly motivated individual with a passion for creating beautiful immersive landscapes. Applicants should be able to work with others in a fast-paced environment. Horticulture can be demanding and requires the candidate to be flexible, passionate, and willing to learn. Successful candidates will have strong expertise maintaining and improving landscapes. Passion for horticulture and landscape maintenance is required for this position. This position will be responsible for working with the horticulture crew leader to improve landscapes city wide. The areas of responsibility include our parks, right of ways, cemeteries, and the downtown corridor. Park horticulturists are expected to be able to work with the Horticulture crew leader to design, grow, and plant landscapes on an annual basis. Horticulture staff should be creative with their assigned landscapes to make Grand Junction the best in the west.
About Grand Junction Parks Operation Division:
The City of Grand Junction's Park Operations Division includes park and trail maintenance, forestry and open space management, sports facilities, horticulture, and cemeteries. It is responsible for 35 developed and seven fully or partially undeveloped parks within the City. In addition to developed parks, the Division also maintains riverfront and urban trails, park and street trees, and open space natural areas across the City. This Division operates and maintains over 350 acres of developed parks, 285 acres of undeveloped parks, 55 acres of school properties, 37,000 public trees, 600 acres of open space, and 21 miles of riverfront and urban trails with 45 full time positions and over 30 seasonal staff members.

Duties
What You'll Do:
- Maintain city landscapes including medians, right of ways, gardens, annual beds, hardscapes, perennials, and shrub plantings.
- Pruning, planting, weeding, trimming, mulching, and taking care of plants
- Design, plan, and implement landscape renovations.
- Apply and record the needed chemical applications including herbicides, PGR’s, bio controls, pesticides, algaecides, rodenticides, insecticides, and fertilizer.
- Assist with Watering, pruning, seeding, weeding, propagating, fertilizing and maintaining plants grown for city landscapes.
- Assist in keeping the cleanliness of the downtown corridor. This includes trash removal, power washing, graffiti removal, snow removal, fountain cleaning, and other duties as assigned.
- Equipment operation including skid loaders, backhoes, street sweepers, tractors, hedge trimmers and other small engine equipment such as mowers and string trimmers.
- Updating, improving, and renovating properties assigned by the Horticulture crew leader.
Qualifications
What We're Looking For:
- One year (1) of general labor experience.
- High School Diploma or G.E.D.
- Possession of, or the ability to obtain, a valid Colorado driver’s license.
- Some assignments in this classification may require the possession of, or the ability to obtain, a valid Colorado Commercial driver’s license.
- Advanced knowledge of ornamental plants, turf, trees, and their correlating water needs.
- Basic understanding of landscape design principles.
- Knowledge of landscaping equipment maintenance and operation.
- Knowledge of managing and building point source irrigation systems.
- CDA Right of Way Pesticide License within one (1) year of employment.
Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
