The Houston Parks and Recreation Department is dedicated to building a sustainable community and enhancing the quality of urban life by providing safe well-maintained parks and offering affordable programming for our community. To achieve this mission, HPARD is seeking a Superintendent to join its Recreation & Wellness-GOLF Team.
The potential candidate will play a role in the following duties:
- Direct and manage all aspects of golf course maintenance at Memorial Park Golf Course, ensuring that the golf course is maintained to the highest level of standards, following modern agronomical practices and regulatory guidelines.
- Prepare and monitor maintenance and staff schedules, including culture control.
- Ensure proper maintenance of specialized course equipment, irrigation system, and course amenities.
- Compile and maintain local, state, and federally mandated records, such as fuel, water, and chemical storage/use.
- Plan, schedule and oversee course repair, construction, and special projects.
- Assist the Senior Superintendent with budget preparation, and initiate/monitor purchases for course equipment and supplies.
- Manage, hire, train and evaluate the performance of personnel. Work with contractors and department managers on joint projects and conflict resolutions. Investigate and resolve complaints; evaluate efficiency and productivity of operations and services; develop plans to resolve problems and manage the completion of projects. Represent departments at meetings, external organizations and agencies.
- Coordinate community feedback and recommends appropriate solutions. Advise immediate management of problems and recommended solutions.
- Represent the department by giving both written and oral presentations to department heads and the public.
- Perform additional assignments as required.
- This position is designated among essential personnel under the City of Houston Emergency Management policy.
WORKING CONDITIONS
The position occasionally requires stooping or bending. Occasional very light lifting, such as three or four reams of papers or books (up to 20 pounds or an equivalent weight) may be required. There are occasional minor discomforts from exposure to less-than-optimal temperature and air conditions. The position may involve dealing with modestly unpleasant situations, as with occasional exposure to office chemicals and/or extensive use of a video display terminal.
Requires an Associate's degree in Recreation, Business Administration, Construction Management or a closely related field.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
Six years of progressively responsible professional and/or skilled experience closely related to the activities of the section are required, including three of the years in a supervisory capacity.
Directly related professional experience may be substituted for the education requirement on a year-for-year basis.

Applicants with a valid driver's license and who comply with the City of Houston's policy on driving (AP 2-2) are highly preferred.
