The Planning Technician performs a wide array of technical work to support the City's planning functions, including zoning, subdivision, historic preservation and code enforcement. Providing customer service and citizen assistance are primary functions of this position. The employee should possess excellent communication and technical skills and be detail oriented.
A DAY IN THE LIFE:
- Serves as the first contact to the public, answering questions, connecting customers to the appropriate department, gathering information and once trained issuing permits, including but not limited to fence permits, accessory structure permits, and sign permits.
- Conducts minor research for projects and upcoming cases; Primary photographer for department and website administration.
- Assist Director in the preparation of agendas, primary contact to Board and Commission members and the media. Takes minutes for The Land Bank and Landmarks Commission. Backs up the Sr. Planning Tech for the Planning Commission, BZA and Housing Commission meetings.
- Primary technical team member setting up ZOOM and Team meetings, meeting presentations and will be trained on GIS mapping. Responsible for maintaining the Planning Department website and all updates to the City's zoning map and comprehensive plan map.
- Conducts investigations, prepares zoning violation notices and letters for Code Enforcement.
WHAT YOU'LL NEED FOR SUCCESS:
- Education: A high school diploma or GED is required.
- Experience: Any directly related experience and/or technical skills are preferred, but willingness to learn those skills is a must. The employee is expected to have acquired the necessary information and skills to perform the job reasonably well with in the first six months of employment.
- Certifications/Licenses: The employee must possess a valid driver's license. A Kansas Driver's License must be obtained within 6 months of appointment.
