Under the supervision of a Building Inspection Supervisor, the Building Inspector will perform technical inspections related to building code compliance for a variety of residential or non-residential construction projects under moderate-to-minimal supervision. This position typically reports directly to an Inspection Supervisor but may receive direction and/or training from a Lead or Senior Inspector.
The Building Inspector is a flexibly staffed position and may be filled at either the Building Inspector I or Building Inspector II level at the discretion of the department, based upon the expertise of the candidate.
Building Inspector II salary: $67,433.60 - $106,038.40 annually
- Inspect, issue corrections for, and approve grading, landscaping, structures, and building structural, electrical, plumbing, and mechanical systems to ensure compliance with adopted building and municipal codes, and department policies and procedures.
- Review construction permits, plans, and specifications to enforce applicable codes and ordinances with the assistance of senior staff on more complex technical questions.
- Prepare daily activity reports, code enforcement documents, inspection forms, submittal logs, and correction notices.
- Consult with and provide information to contractors, designers, architects, engineers, and/or property owners regarding building and municipal codes, department policies and procedures, and project compliance. Provide technical advice and/or recommendations to achieve project compliance with codes and standards.
- Maintain knowledge of applicable codes, laws, standards, ordinances, and construction practices. May research codes, standards, or construction practices for the Inspection Supervisor or Chief Building Official.

Building Inspector I
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Technical coursework in construction technology or construction inspection field with some construction inspection experience or any combination of education and experience that provides equivalent knowledge, skills, and abilities.
- Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid California driver's license.
- Associate's degree in a construction technology or construction inspection field.
- Two years of construction inspection experience or any combination of education and experience that provides equivalent knowledge, skills, and abilities.
- Possession of registration as a Certified Inspector in two or more disciplines is required.
- Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid California driver's license.
- A highly motivated individual with problem-solving skills.
- Team player mentality with outstanding customer service skills.
- An individual with a good understanding of design and construction practices.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
