The Information Technology Division is actively seeking a Radio Systems Technician.

This is skilled technical work installing, terminating, diagnosing, repairing, programming and testing VHF, UHF, and 800 MHZ conventional two-way radios, antennas, speakers and AVL/GPS equipment, laptops, video cameras and associated electronics and devices. Work requires knowledge of the principles and mechanics of two-way radios and associated public safety electronics and equipment. Contacts require courtesy, tact, and effectiveness in dealing with others to request or provide information, ask questions or obtain information. Work is performed following substantially diversified methods, practices, and procedures and usually involves similar situations. Work is performed primarily in buildings and structures where risks and hazards are substantial, but are known, somewhat predictable, and mostly controllable. Work is performed on police, fire/rescue, government, marine, aircraft, utility and service vehicles. Physical demands are moderate and consist primarily of standing, stooping, bending, reaching, climbing, walking at work sites for extended periods of time, and occasionally lifting and moving objects weighing up to 50 pounds. Operates motor vehicle and uses equipment and tools necessary for installing, diagnosing and repairing digital and analog telecommunication networks and associated electronic equipment. Operates standard office equipment such as personal computer. Work is performed under limited supervision where work assignments are subject to established procedures, practices, or well-defined policies and are reviewed, usually after the fact, in terms of quality, timeliness, and adherence to methods, standards, and policies.
- Installs, terminates, diagnoses, programs, and tests two-way radios, antennas, speakers and AVL/GPS equipment, laptops, video cameras and associated electronics and equipment.
- Performs customized and creative radio installs with minimal supervision.
- Establishes and maintains records on task and component performance.
- Provides technical guidance and training to customers and other employees.
- Compiles, maintains and interprets technical and engineering diagrams and schematics and other records and documentation on installations and repairs.
- Completes work order and trouble report documentation on work performed.
- Performs routine radio programming using Motorola CPS software.
- Perform routine radio subscriber repairs.
- May lead, guide, coordinate and review the work of other employees.
- Operates standard office equipment such as personal computer using word, spreadsheet, database, and other related software.
- Operates motor vehicle.
- Demonstrates proficiency in the City of Jacksonville's competencies.
- Performs related work as required.
- Knowledge of the principles, concepts and practices of VHF, UHF, and 800 MHZ conventional 2-way radio two-way radios, antennas, speakers and AVL/GPS equipment, laptops, video cameras and associated electronics and equipment.
- Knowledge of industry standards, regulations and safety procedures.
- Ability to install, terminate, diagnose, repair and test VHF, UHF, and 800 MHZ conventional 2-way radio two-way radios, antennas, speakers and AVL/GPS equipment, laptops, video cameras and associated electronics and equipment.
- Ability to develop and recommend improvements to work standards and procedures.
- Ability to prioritize work and complete work as scheduled.
- Ability to perform complex bench tests on two-way radio communication and public safety electronic systems and devices.
- Ability to read, understand, analyze, interpret and apply technical data, manuals, schematics, and related specifications.
- Ability to complete forms, prepare reports and draw schematics regarding work performed.
- Ability to train and provide technical instruction and direction to others.
- Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
- Ability to operate a motor vehicle.
- Ability to operate standard office equipment such as personal computer using word, spreadsheet, database, and other related software.
OPEN REQUIREMENTS:
- Two (2) years of education and/or experience in the radio telecommunication field which includes
- At least two (2) years of experience installing and repairing two-way radios and related equipment.
- Must be free from color blindness.
LICENSING/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRATION:
- A valid driver's license is required prior to appointment and must be maintained during employment in this class.
- Must qualify for prior to appointment, obtain, and maintain during employment in this class the City of Jacksonville certification as a public driver.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
- The probationary period for this class is six months.
Must pass the Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) background screening performed by the Jacksonville Sherriff’s Office prior to appointment. Within 30 days of appointment date to classification, acquire and maintain the appropriate level of Criminal Justice Information Systems (CJIS) certification which corresponds to the job responsibilities. The level will be determined by current CJIS guidelines and may change periodically. Certification is obtained by successfully completing a web-based training course and test which covers physical security, incident response, the protection of information and other IT specific security threats, vulnerabilities, and risks.
