DUTIESA Background Investigator Trainee is a civilian employee who conducts and compiles personal and professional background investigations for public safety candidates by interviewing employers, co-workers, neighbors, law enforcement officials, military personnel, members of the candidate’s family, and personal references; prepares reports on findings; makes recommendations as to background findings; and performs other related duties.
- Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a degree in Criminal Justice or a closely related field; and
- Five years of post-degree work experience.
PROCESS NOTES
- Applicants with experience using social media for investigative purposes are preferred.
- A valid California Driver’s license is required and must be maintained through the course of employment. Applicants will be disqualified and not eligible for hire if their record within the last 36 months reflects three or more moving violations and/or at-fault accidents, or a conviction of a major moving violation (such as DUI).
- Prior to appointment, a thorough and comprehensive background investigation will be conducted.
- Upon appointment, Background investigator Trainees employed by the Personnel Department may be required to provide an automobile, properly insured, for use in City service. Mileage will be paid in accordance with established rates.
- Work location is Downtown Los Angeles. However, Background Investigator Trainees in the course of performing field investigations may be required to drive to areas outside of downtown Los Angeles.
- To be considered "post-degree work experience", experience must be gained in paid positions after obtaining a four-year degree.

NOTES:
- This position is exempted from the civil service provisions of the City Charter. Exempt employees serve at the will of the appointing authority and can be terminated any time without cause.
- Individuals appointed to this position will be required to work on an as-needed basis with a maximum of 900 hours per service year (approximately 15 to 20 hours per week) and no minimum guaranteed number of hours per week or per year. A service year begins on the start date of employment and on each anniversary date thereafter.
- Initial appointments are anticipated to be made on a part-time basis. Full-time opportunities may be available in the future, but are not guaranteed.
- Candidates who worked as part-time, exempt employees with the City of Los Angeles in the past 12 months may not be eligible for hire.
