Under the direction of the City Engineer or designee, inspect capital improvement projects and development construction projects to assure compliance with approved plans, contracts, standard plans, specifications, and City, State, and federal codes, ordinances, and regulations.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
The Construction Inspector I classification provides an opportunity to learn the processes and operations of construction for capital improvement projects and development projects. The Construction Inspector II classification performs a variety of responsible duties requiring an understanding of the operations and procedures of capital improvement projects and development construction projects to assure compliance with approved plans, contracts, standard plans, specifications, and City, State, and federal codes, ordinances, and regulations.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
Inspect capital improvement projects and development construction projects to assure compliance with approved plans, contracts, standard plans, specifications, and City, State, and federal codes, ordinances, and regulations; prioritize and schedule site inspections; conduct utility tests and inspections to assure proper system operations; resolve related issues as appropriate.
Compare plans, contracts, encroachment permits, standard plans and specifications with projects under construction and identify discrepancies and issues; collaborate with contractors, engineers and others in resolving discrepancies between approved construction plans and on-site construction development and activities; perform follow-up inspections of construction sites to assure correction of noted violations and discrepancies.
Serve as a technical resource to City personnel and outside agencies concerning compliance issues; respond to inquiries and provide recommendations regarding proper construction practices, enhancement of field procedures, methods, policies and problem resolution techniques; interpret, apply and explain code requirements and ordinances.
Prepare detailed notifications regarding discrepancies of standard plans and specifications; prepare correspondence to clarify policy, contracts, plans and specifications; distribute notifications and correspondence to appropriate departments and personnel.
Assure construction sites meet permit and insurance requirements; resolve related issues with administrators and personnel as appropriate.
Prepare and maintain a variety of mandated and requested records and reports related to daily and periodic construction inspections, observations, permits, personnel, contracts, issues and assigned activities; establish and maintain filing systems.
Operate a variety of office equipment including a computer and assigned software; utilize gauges, probes, measuring devices and other testing equipment; drive a vehicle to conduct work.
Communicate with City personnel and outside agencies to exchange information, coordinate activities and resolve issues or concerns.
Respond to public questions and concerns regarding capital improvement projects and development projects; provide information concerning construction activities, standard plans, specifications and related requirements; conduct various inspections related to citizen complaints.

Hourly Rate: $35.46 - $43.10
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:Any combination equivalent to: one year experience at a journeyman level working heavy construction, or one year of experience in construction/building inspection, or related field.
LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
Valid California driver’s license.
CONSTRUCTION INSPECTOR II
Hourly Rate: $40.00 - $48.62
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:Any combination equivalent to: two years of experience as a Construction Inspector I.
