General Statement of Duties and Distinguishing Features of Class
The City of Mason operates the Mason Community Center, Mason Municipal Aquatic Center, and various outdoor park sites where recreation programs, special events and facility rentals are held. This individual works under the general direction of the Parks & Recreation Assistant Director and works closely with other Parks & Recreation personnel as well as personnel from other departments of the City.
This position is responsible for implementing comprehensive recreational programs, developing & managing department budgets, leading teams of employees, assist with the facility management of Mason Community Center & Mason Municipal Aquatic Center, coordinate programming in eight City parks, create & foster mutually beneficial partnerships with local organizations and leaders within the Mason community.
City recreational facilities are open 365 days per year. Work hours vary and will include evenings, weekends, and holidays to support programming, special events, facility rentals and staff.
The Parks & Recreation Department has 19 full time positions. This individual will work as part of a team of three full-time Recreation Managers sharing the responsibility of supervising 100 or more employees in the Parks & Recreation Department. This individual will exercise supervision over a variety of full-time personnel, part-time staff, seasonal staff, interns, and volunteers.
Work involves financial evaluation and analysis of current and new operations, programs, activities, partnerships, and events to ensure they are financially sustainable either through a direct revenue stream or through the benefits they provide to the community. This position will provide financial evaluation, analysis, and support to City personnel to ensure sound decisions related to the City’s recreational facilities and business operations.

- Responsible for the development, implementation and evaluation of assigned programs and services related to recreation and leisure programming for all ages offered at City facilities and in the Mason community;
- Directly supervises facility & programming staff;
- Assesses recreation needs of Mason Community Center members, Mason residents and the Mason corporate community to develop programs in accordance with those needs;
- Researches, develops and introduces new recreation programs reflecting current industry trends;
- Researches, develops and introduces new special events and facility rentals to City facilities that facilitate building a culture of wellness in the Mason community and stimulate economic development;
- Develops and maintains cooperative working relationships with community service agencies, organizations and local businesses whose activities/services can assist the department in carrying-out its’ mission;
- Acts as Manager on Duty for the Mason Community Center & Mason Municipal Aquatic Center and assists with other programs and initiatives throughout all departments as assigned;
- Under the guidance of Human Resources, interviews, trains, schedules, supervises and evaluates appropriate staff;
- Maintains complete and accurate personnel, safety and program records;
- Organizes and conducts orientation and in-service training for staff and volunteers;
- Assists with budgeting functions for programs and services related to fitness and health;
- Assists in the design and development of promotional materials;
- Responds to inquiries, complaints and requests for information from residents and Mason Community Center members;
- Prepares and submits program reports, as appropriate or assigned;
- Makes presentations and speeches at meetings and other community events;
- Performs routine office, administrative functions and special projects as needed;
- Develop competency in the City’s RecTrac computer software application;
- Participates in external and internal committees as assigned;
- Performs related work, special projects and other duties as assigned;
