Job Description
Under general supervision, the Meter Technician provides customer service to all McAllen Public Utility (MPU) customers which includes connecting/disconnecting water service, provides leak detection assistance on site, enters data and completes service orders via an electronic device, makes routine decisions and occasionally performs meter reading duties. The employee has daily contact with the public and internal customers requiring courtesy, tact, diplomacy and knowledge of the tasks to be discussed or accomplished. Job Responsibilities
1. Position requires driving directly to specific locations and performs required task(s) as requested by the Customer Service department, Utility Billing, MPU and other administrative officials.
2. Turns on/turns off water services, inspects buildings and property for water leaks, verifies meter reads per customer requests (billing disputes) and checks for abnormal consumption.
3. Inspects meters and connections for defects, damage and unauthorized connections.
4. Assists with meter reading when necessary as required.
5. Enters data on site in an electronic smart device for billing purposes (must be accurate).
6. Informs and educates the citizens to recognize potential plumbing leaks and causes for high water consumption within their property.
7. Performs site investigations to provide resolutions to citizen's concerns.
8. Orders dispatch services in the absence of a dispatcher.
9. Performs other task(s) as required by the supervisor.
10. Performs other related duties as assigned to enhance the overall operations and services of the department. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Minimum Requirements - 1. Job requires an accredited high school diploma or GED equivalent.
2. Job requires one (1) year of work experience, preferably in the municipal utilities or customer service.
3. Job requires a current, valid Texas Class C driver's license.
4. This position requires a Class "D" water operator license. If candidate lacks TCEQ license, candidate must be able to obtain a Class "D" water operator license within one (1) year of taking course/exam.
5. Employee must be able to communicate effectively in English and Spanish.
6. Must be able to use a computer, word processor, copy machine, fax machine, laptop and iPad. Employee will be trained to use a meter reading handheld device; two-way radio any other office type equipment.
7. Must be able to communicate with the public in a courteous manner, using tact and diplomacy.
8. Required to be on stand-by (on call waiting to be engaged to work) duty evenings and weekends on a rotating basis.
9. Due to constant exposure with the public, employee is required to perform in a professional manner and positively reflect the City of McAllen and MPU. Physical Requirements
1. Employee works in a field setting with exposure to outside environmental conditions and safety hazards.
2. Work requires exerting up to 10 lbs. frequently or negligible amounts constantly and requires walking or standing to a significant degree. Additional physical demands are available. Additional Information
1. This position is safety sensitive subject to random drug and alcohol testing.
2. This position does not have supervisory responsibilities over others.
3. Schedule is Monday through Friday but employee is required to be on stand-by Monday through Sunday every 6 weeks on a routing basis.
4. This position requires employee to assist as assigned waiting to be engaged during hurricane and other emergencies.
