What are the responsibilities and job description for the Firefighter On-Call position at City of Minnetonka?
- Responds to emergency calls to provide fire suppression, rescue, hazardous materials and emergency medical assistance to the public.
- Responds to emergency incidents, which involves getting to the scene quickly and safely, with the proper protective equipment.
- Rescues individuals from fires and other emergency situations.
- Contains and extinguishes fires, places hose lines and ladders, directs and operates nozzles and ventilates structures. This may involve working inside, outside and on top of burning and/or smoke filled structures.
- Performs salvage and overhaul operations which may include placing salvage covers, removing excess water, opening walls and ceilings, removal of debris and covering openings in a structure.
- Renders emergency medical treatment commensurate to their level of training and certification to injured or ill victims.
- Operates fire department apparatus and equipment in accordance with fire department protocol and with due care for the safety of personnel, citizenry and property.
- Assists at hazardous materials and technical rescue incidents to a level commensurate to their training.
- Prepares, inspects and cleans equipment to ensure its proper functioning.
- Maintains and improves rescue and firefighting knowledge and skills. Attends internal and external training and maintains familiarity with fire department protocols, equipment operating procedures and the city street system.
- Maintains facilities and performs housekeeping duties as directed.
- Works duty crew shifts, drills, meetings and other details as assigned.
- When no officer is available, he/she may be called upon to supervise other firefighters.
- Performs other duties and assumes other responsibilities as apparent or assigned.
- Possesses a valid driver's license.
- Minimum 18 years of age.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Live within 15 minutes of a Minnetonka fire station.
- A belief in and commitment to the organization's shared values.
- Current state firefighter I certification.
- Current state firefighter II certification.
- Current state-certified emergency medical technician.
- Current certified first responder.
- Current certified paramedic.
- Prior firefighting and/or EMS experience in the last 2 years
- Firefighting principles, policies and practices.
- Knowledge of current programs and practices concerning firefighter training and safety.
- Knowledge of current emergency medical services and hazardous materials response practices.
- Must be able to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
- Starting pay is $18.475*
- ($14.775 Base Pay $3.70. The $3.70 is going into a deferred compensation account that gets released to the employee once they leave the department.)
- Pay increases to $20.018* once all probationary requirements have been completed, usually within 12-18 months, but can be sooner for candidates with prior experience.
- Retirement Pension. After completing 10 - 30 years of service, employees who retire from the department receive a lump sum of $13,500 per year served which is payable upon retirement and/or once 50 years or older.
SELECTION PROCESS
ATTEND MANDATORY MEETING – February 8, AT 06:00 PM
All applicants must attend a meeting that will discuss the desired attributes of a firefighter on-call position for the Minnetonka Fire Department as well as the different steps of the process and how to best prepare.
Written Exam – Week of February 12This exam may take 2.5 to 3 hours to complete with a 3-hour time limit. This is a basic aptitude test. Please arrive early enough to check-in and get seated. Those that receive a passing score will move forward to the next step in the process. Passing this exam is required to be considered for a firefighter position.
PANEL INTERVIEW – Week of March 4
Applicants who successfully complete the written test will receive an invitation to attend an interview with an interview panel.
FINALISTS CHIEF’S INTERVIEW – March 18 to 29
This interview will be with chief officers. During this interview, we will clarify anything needed about the candidates' experience and examine the observations made during observations of fire department activities.
FINALIST IDENTIFIED / CONDITIONAL OFFER – Beginning of AprilThe selected candidate who successfully passes both rounds of interviews and the panel presentation will receive a contingent offer. This offer will outline instructions and next steps. The offer is contingent on the candidate successfully passing the pre-employment process.
PRE-EMPLOYMENT PROCESS – BACKGROUND CHECK, PHYSICAL EXAM WITH DRUG SCREEN, CERTIFICATION VALIDATION AND PSYCHOLOGICAL EXAMINATION
Candidates will complete a background check, physical exam with drug screen and work simulation, psychological examination, and validation of any previous fire-related certifications and education.
The candidate’s certifications and education will be validated.
