General Job Summary:
Performs technical semi-skilled work in construction, maintenance, and repair to the City’s electrical transmission system. Work involves all duties necessary for proper and efficient operation as well as operating heavy equipment. As a lineman, you will assist in maintaining, repairing, and testing substation and distribution equipment, switch gear, relays, reclosures and circuit breakers.
Job Duties and Responsibilities:
- Assists in maintaining primary and secondary circuits with the City of Newberry to include converting voltages, performing hot line work, setting poles, re-insulating poles, changing out rotten poles, locating broken or burnt lines with fault locator, assembling and installing cut-outs and arrestor. Performs the above functions on energized lines, utilizing appropriate hot line tools.
- Receives and reviews work orders, meter test reports, staking sheets, vehicle service charts, electrical drawings, purchase orders and substation readings. Conducts servicing for consumers such as installing new wire service, troubleshooting, installing yard lights and streetlights, restoring power, etc. Must be knowledgeable of traffic laws.
- Operates equipment and vehicles such as connector wrench, hydraulic drill, gas operated drill, chain saw, trencher, bucket trucks, digger, etc. Tools used include hot sticks, rubber gloves, phasing sticks, fiberglass cross arms, suspension insulators, transformers, electric meters, combination cut-outs, etc.
- Assists in checking meters for proper functions, tampering or other operational problems.
- Courteous and diplomatic communication with diverse groups including the citizens of Newberry, businesses, and City employees in various departments.
Minimum Skills and Requirements:
- High school diploma or GED supplemented by two (2) years to five (5) years of progressively responsible technical experience in electrical line work; or equivalent combination that provides knowledge, ability, and skills.
- SC driver’s license, preferred CDL Class-A.
- Must live within 30 minutes of the City of Newberry.
- Must have the ability to attain Lineman level certifications as designated by Utilities Director and Superintendent.
- Residency requirement: employee must live within 30 minutes of principle work location in Newberry. Subject to standby duty and twenty-four-hour call back.
- Must have the ability to work in outside environment for long periods of time in all weather conditions including, but not limited to, extreme heat or cold, wet, icy, and high winds. Must have ability to work while being exposed to noise, dust, fumes, chemicals, gases, and oil.
Schedule: Monday – Thursday 7am – 5pm. Subject to 24-hour call back.
Hourly Pay Range: Based on experience, certifications, and CDL.
$22.59/hour - 'C' Lineman
$24.79/hour - 'B' Lineman
$37.00/hour based on experience, certifications, and CDL.
