GENERAL STATEMENT OF RESPONSIBILITIES
Under limited supervision, this position is responsible for performing specialized data collection
activities related to traffic patterns and traffic counts throughout the City. Reports to the
Transportation Operations Superintendent.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Plans, schedules and performs work and related activities in the performance of field inspections for
a variety of traffic data collection; inputs data into the Intelligent Traffic System; responds to special
traffic counting requests from various departments; collects speed and vehicle data. Responsible for
installing and maintaining battery-operated traffic counters at specified locations throughout the
City. Utilizes global positioning systems to ensure proper placement of counters. Assists Traffic
Counter with manual traffic volume counts at major intersections throughout the City as needed.
Responsible for the effective supervision of assigned personnel including prioritizing and assigning
work, performance management, employee relations, and related activities.
Utilizes software programs to download data from battery-operated and digital traffic counters;
generates specialized reports for analysis and distribution. Responsible for maintaining the annual
Traffic Volume Historical Growth Report, the Crash Analysis database, and obtaining data from
pavement magnometers, video detection counters and fire radar detectors to assist with
recommendations for improvements using the Citywide Signal System.
Interacts with vendors for the purchase and maintenance of traffic counting equipment and software
packages. Generates work orders and processes; implements work processes and safety standards.
Performs other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE
Traffic Technology - Knowledge of the principles and practices of traffic technology current traffic
design standards

Safety - Knowledge of occupational hazards, safety precautions, and safety regulations related to
traffic patterns and conditions and other work related precautions.
Supervision - Knowledge of leadership techniques, principles and procedures to assign work,
schedule and train staff.

professional relationships with employees, representatives from other departments and
organizations, and the public.

Computer Skills – Utilizes a personal computer to generate reports and documentation as needed.
REQUIRED ABILITIES
Coordination of Work – Plans and organizes daily work routine and establishes priorities for the
completion of work in accordance with sound time-management methodology. Performs a broad
range of supervisory responsibilities over others.
Communication – Ability to communicate ideas effectively, including the preparation of reports
and logs. Ability to listen and understand directions, information and ideas presented verbally
and in writing. Ability to handle a variety of customer service issues with tact and diplomacy in a
confidential manner.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Requires a high school diploma and 1-2 yrs. of related data collection or experience or an equivalent
combination of education and experience.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Requires a valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Tasks require the ability to exert very moderate physical effort in light work.
Some combination of stooping, kneeling, crouching and crawling.
Some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of moderate weight (10-20
pounds).
SENSORY REQUIREMENTS
Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, depth,
textures, sounds, and visual cues or signals.
Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.
