The City of Oxnard is accepting applications for Lateral Firefighter.
DEFINITION:
Under general supervision, performs the full array of duties assigned to classes in the Firefighter series including prevention of fires through active and effective inspections and public education and enforcement of codes; provides medical response and care for injured or ill persons; combats fires; protects life and property; operates and maintains fire fighting equipment and fire stations; demonstrates a full understanding of all applicable policies, procedures and work methods associated with assigned duties; occasionally assists in the training of entry level Firefighter positions; performs related duties as required.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
The Firefighter is the journey level position responsible for fire prevention, medical care and fire combat work. Once assigned to duty, firefighters are expected to perform the full range of prevention, safety, medical and suppression duties assigned to the class and to perform journey level skills in all areas of work assigned. This classification is distinguished from the next higher classification of Fire Captain by the performance of the non-administrative and non-supervisory level of work.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED/EXERCISED:
General supervision is provided by the Fire Captain. Incumbents of this class do not routinely exercise supervision.
Include but are not limited to the following:
- Performs the full array of duties assigned to classes in the Firefighter series including responding to fire suppression and medical emergencies.
- Applies modern techniques relative to fire code enforcement, interpretation and inspection.
- Drives, operates, inspects, maintains and cleans fire apparatus and/or other vehicles.
- Participates in fire drills and training exercises.
- Adheres to fire department rules, regulations and procedures.
- Serves in special duty at public gatherings.
- Acts as Fire Engineer on assigned shift.
- Performs specialized assignments including water rescue, urban search and rescue, as required.
The following are minimal qualifications necessary for entry into the classification:
Education and/or Experience:
- Possession of a high school diploma, or equivalent.
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- Must have previously graduated from the Oxnard Fire Department Recruit Academy
- Must have passed probation and left in good standing,
- Possession of, or the ability to obtain, a valid class C California driver's license.
- Must obtain a Class B Drivers License or Firefighter endorsement within one year of initial employment.
- Must obtain an Emergency Medical Technician I Certificate within one year of initial employment.
UNION MEMBERSHIP: This position is represented by the International Association of Firefighters (IAFF).
Selected candidate(s) must pass a thorough background investigation.
NOTE:
The salary rates for this position are dependent on assignment. The salary shown on this job bulletin is reflective of the Fire Department shift work schedule.
The work schedule of this position may vary depending on assignment.
This position requires a twelve (12) month probationary period.
The list of qualified candidates that is established from this recruitment may be used to fill other full-time, part-time and temporary assignments as vacancies arise.
For most positions, the City of Oxnard relies on office automation (Microsoft Office) and web-based enabled tools, therefore candidates must be proficient and comfortable with computer use to perform functions associated with on-going work.
Employees are required to participate in the City's direct deposit plan and are paid on a bi-weekly basis.
City staff may be required to play an active role in the event of an emergency, which may include changes in responsibilities and working hours.

Vacation/Annual Accrual Rates: Full time employees accrue annual leave at a rate of 6.24-11.78 hours per bi-weekly pay period based on years of service.
Deferred Compensation:
The City contributes 1% to a deferred compensation program.
Bilingual Pay:
A regular full time employee may receive bilingual pay at the rate of $50.00-$125.00 bi-weekly depending on the Level the employee is required to provide bilingual services as determined by the City Manager or designee.
Health and Dental:
Employees can choose from a variety of medical plans provided by the City. The City's contribution to medical coverage is outlined below:
Level One – For employees hired before January 1, 2023, the City contributes $1,543.00 per month toward medical insurance premiums and an additional $74.21 per month toward dental insurance premiums. Employees will receive cash back if the medical plan they choose is less than the City’s monthly contribution of $1,543.00 per month. Employees who waive medical insurance will receive cash back in the amount $1,243.00 per month provided they provide proof of other qualifying coverage. Any unused dental premium monies are paid to the employee. If employees hired prior to January 1, 2023 make any changes to their health plan, they will be placed in level two.
Level Two - For employees hired on or after January 1, 2023, the City will contribute $1,774.00 towards medical insurance premiums with no cash back. Employees who waive medical insurance will receive $500.00 per month cash back provided they show proof of other qualifying coverage. The City will continue to provide $74.21 per month towards dental insurance.
Life Insurance: City employees receive Basic Life and have the option to purchase additional insurance coverage.
Tuition Reimbursement: Full-time employees are eligible for 75% reimbursement for work related coursework.
Holidays: The City observes 12 holidays per year.
