HVAC I $19.25-$22.13

Under close supervision, performs entry-level duties as assigned to perform general HVAC maintenance and equipment replacement for all City owned facilities including mechanical, electrical, plumbing; and performs related duties as assigned.  The HVAC Technician I is the entry-level class in the HVAC Technician series with a minimum of five (5) years of relevant experience.  Performs the more routine duties while learning City policies and procedures and becoming familiar with the variety of departmental systems and practices.  Facilitates the development of public trust and confidence in the City.

  • Keeps the mission, vision and values of the City of Port St. Lucie at the forefront of decision making and action; builds strategic and collaborative relationships and interacts with others in a way that builds confidence and trust; provides excellent customer service by taking action to accomplish objectives, maintaining high levels of work and productivity by generating innovative solutions to work situations.
  • Provides assistance for troubleshooting and repairs HVAC equipment and performs scheduled general and specialized preventative maintenance on air conditioning equipment in City owned buildings.
  • Provides assistance for developing plans and specifications for projects for replacing equipment and oversees Contractor installations.
  • Provides assistance for inspecting and studies existing systems, practices and procedures for documenting improvements and develops recommendations and practices for a preventive safety and maintenance program.
  • Provides assistance for obtaining costs and requisitions for replacement equipment, materials, tools and supplies for projects and regular operations. 
  • Performs general buildings and facilities maintenance and repair duties as directed. Operates vehicles, tools and equipment as duties require.
  • Collects and researches data.
  • Designs workflows and procedures of maintenance work.
  • Other duties may be assigned.

HVAC Technician I
Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma.  Minimum of five (5) years of relevant experience in air conditioning, and HVAC system repair and maintenance.  Valid Class “E” Florida Driver's License and maintenance of clean driving record. FDLE-CJIS Certification required for employment.  Employees must attain CJIS Certification prior to hire date and must maintain certification in good standing consistently and without lapse. Possession of E.P.A. Certificate for refrigerant recovery is required prior to employment and shall be maintained without lapse.

Valid Class “E” Florida Driver's License and maintenance of clean driving record.

  • Knowledge of the standard methods, materials, tools, codes, and practices of the air conditioning trade.
  • Skill in the care and use of tools and equipment used in the air conditioning trade. Ability to maintain and repair HVAC systems without supervision. 
  • Ability to work from blueprints, sketches and/or verbal directions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and the public.
  • Ability to keep good records and submit reports. 
  • Ability to comprehend complex and detailed information associated with mechanical building maintenance requests.
  • Ability to utilize experience to complete maintenance requests in a timely and cost-effective manner.
  • Knowledge of the safe use of supplies.
  • Ability to quickly learn procedures.
  • Knowledge of tools and equipment required to perform duties.
  • Skill in the operation and preventive maintenance of equipment and related tools.
  • Ability to operate equipment required to perform duties.
  • Ability to perform heavy manual labor under various weather conditions.
  • Ability to follow written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in writing and orally.
  • Ability to focus on the positive in every situation.
  • Ability to model respect for individuals, teams, and the organization.
  • Ability to stay centered when challenged.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to walk, stand, kneel, bend, crawl, use hands to finger, handle, or feel, reach with hands and arms, talk and hear. The employee is frequently required to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and climb a ladder up to 30 feet in height.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision and ability to adjust focus. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to outside weather conditions, wet and/or humid conditions, fumes, chemicals, airborne particles and risk of electrical shock.  The employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts, high/precarious places, toxic or caustic chemicals, vibration, and uneven surfaces. The employee works with potentially hazardous power tools and is exposed to heights up to 30 feet. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud. The position is fast paced.
