An Automotive Equipment Operator I drives and operates one or more pieces of equipment, some of which may include pavement marking vehicles, 6-12 yard dump trucks, compressor trucks, boom trucks, tower or platform trucks, crane trucks and small front-end loaders. Other positions may require additional Tanker, HazMat, and/or Combination endorsements and Certifications.

What you'll get to do: 
  • Drive and operate a variety of automotive motorized vehicles and related equipment which may include pavement marking vehicles, dump trucks, compressor trucks, boom trucks, tower or platform trucks, crane trucks and small front-end loaders in a city environment. 
  • Perform ground activities such as work zone traffic control, loading, unloading, digging, grading, and other assigned manual labor 
  • Operate a variety of equipment including sandblasting and pressure washing, jack hammer, chipper, and chainsaw and duties as assigned by management.  
  • Collaborate with the crew and always represent the City of Portland to the public in a professional manner. 
Important Highlights:
  • Work is often done in heavy traffic
  • There are positions available on either day or night shift 
  • May require working on Saturday or Sunday and holidays  
  • This is an essential position during inclement weather, natural disasters, and other emergencies
  • Employees in this classification are subject to federally mandated random drug/alcohol testing
  • Employees are expected to work effectively with a culturally diverse workforce and to recognize the value of and cultivate cultural diversity in the workplace. 
  • Depending on the location of the position, some may be assigned additional duties such as pulling a variety of trailers, the operation of auxiliary equipment and related semi-skilled and manual work as part of a ground crew in addition to driving

COVID-19 Vaccine Requirement
As of October 18, 2021, all City employees must be fully vaccinated for COVID-19. This is required for all positions at the City of Portland. Proof of being fully vaccinated is required by date of hire. You may request an exception for health or religious reasons, from getting the COVID-19 vaccine at the time a position is offered.
Applicants must provide details in their supplemental question responses and resume that demonstrate how their education, training and/or experience, meets each of the following minimum qualifications: 

  1. Experience safely operating a Class A vehicle within a high-density urban city environment.
  2. Experience safely performing ground activities such as work zone traffic control, loading and unloading equipment, digging, grading and/or other manual labor.
  3. Experience receiving and following oral and/or written instructions and communicating clearly with coworkers.
  4. Experience detecting needed maintenance, adjustments, or changes to equipment.
  5. Experience safely securing a piece of equipment or a load on a flat bed or trailer.
Applicants must also:
  • Possess a valid Class "A" Commercial Driver's License and an acceptable driving record at time of application.
  • Submit a "complete" five-year court-certified Driver's Abstract of Driving Record (obtained at applicant's expense) upon offer.
  • Take and pass a Pre-Placement medical exam upon offer.
  • Take and pass a Pre-employment DOT drug test upon offer.
  • Must be fully vaccinated for COVID-19 per City/State mandate or have an approved exception by date of hire.
This recruitment will consist of an evaluation of each applicant's answers to the supplemental questions, work history, education and certificates/license information as demonstrated in their application.

  • First Review: Applications including the work history and answers to the supplemental questions will be evaluated for minimum qualification requirements. 
  • Work Skills Demonstration: Candidates whose applications clearly reflect the minimum qualifications will be invited to participate in a hands-on work skills demonstration that will include driving as well as manual labor.
  • Eligible List Established: Those that pass the work skills demonstration will be placed on an equally ranked eligible list. You have 14 days from the notice of the examination results to let us know if you disagree with your results. Please read the City of Portland Administrative Rule 3.01 for complete information.

Job offer is contingent upon verification of credentials and other information required by the employment process and may include an interview, reference and criminal history background check, medical exam, and a review of driving record.
