The City of Redding is creating an eligibility list for Computer Support Specialist to fill one full-time vacancy in the Information Technology Department, as well as future vacancies that occur during the life of this list.
The ideal candidate would have three or more years of IBM iSeries experience in an operations role, monitoring systems status, processing reports, data entry, and maintaining printers and backup devices. Also having experience with Robot schedule and tools is a plus. Good customer service is a must.
Under immediate supervision, depending on assignment, perform computer operations and/or coordinate between Information Systems and other City departments for the installation of PC applications, data base access and a first point of contact for problem resolution.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
COMPUTER SUPPORT SPECIALIST I
This is the entry level classification in the series and is distinguished from the journey level by lower level of duties and responsibilities assigned and independence is completing assignments. Incumbents in this class may be advanced to the Applications Technician II level upon meeting the requirements of that classification, completing a minimum of two years of satisfactory performance as Computer Support Specialist I, in a full-time position or equivalent service, with the City of Redding, and upon the recommendation of the Department Director.
COMPUTER SUPPORT SPECIALIST II
This is the journey level classification in the series and is distinguished by the incumbent's ability to perform all of the duties and responsibilities of the entry level classification with minimal direction and supervision. Incumbents in this class may be advanced to the advanced journey level upon meeting the requirements of that classification, completing a minimum of two years of satisfactory performance as Computer Support Specialist II, in a full-time position or equivalent service, with the City of Redding, and upon the recommendation of the Department Director.
NOTE: The following are the duties performed by employees in this classification. However, employees may perform other related duties. Not all duties listed are necessarily performed by each individual in the classification.
COMPUTER SUPPORT SPECIALIST I
Provide technical assistance in authorized software applications in a group, or individual basis and provide training, consulting, and technical assistance.
Troubleshoot software problems as necessary and perform new product analysis on software.
Provide Help Desk support to City users.
Investigate new software applications which might assist and enhance user productivity.
Design and assist Departments with the Internet page construction and Internet usage.
Monitor the AS/400 and all users signed on to system; perform data entry; perform backup operations; print and distribute reports; and respond to questions/problems from users..
Assist in the installation of microcomputer software.
Perform other duties as assigned within the scope of the job classification.
COMPUTER SUPPORT SPECIALIST II
Provide instruction in authorized software applications in a group, or individual basis and provide training, consulting, and technical assistance.
Troubleshoot software problems as necessary and perform new product analysis on software.
Provide Help Desk support to City users.
Investigate new software applications which might assist and enhance user productivity.
Design and assist Departments with the Internet page construction and Internet usage.
Assist in the installation of microcomputer software.
Perform computer operations, including but not limited to: Oversee daily IBM System AS/400 operations; monitor workflow of lower level staff; monitor the AS/400 and all users signed on to system; perform data entry; perform backup operations; print and distribute reports; monitor disk usage; troubleshoot and respond to questions/problems from users; install Program Temporary Fixes (PTFs); perform routine maintenance and cleaning of computer hardware; compile and maintain procedures; and maintain logs and reports.
Perform other duties as assigned within the scope of the job classification.
Knowledge of:
COMPUTER SUPPORT SPECIALIST I
Mainframe computer system; word processing techniques and applications; electronic spreadsheets; interfacing applications; data base; and basic understanding of structured programs for usage and modification; methods of automating manual office systems; principles and methods of training users on microcomputers and the City-owned main computer system.
COMPUTER SUPPORT SPECIALIST II
Mainframe computer system operations, equipment and applications; word processing techniques and applications; electronic spreadsheets; basic accounting procedures and principles; interfacing applications; data base; and comprehension of structured programs for usage and modification; methods of automating manual office systems; principles and methods of training users on microcomputers and the City-owned main computer system.

COMPUTER SUPPORT SPECIALIST II
Interact effectively with the public and employees. Oversee the work of lower level employees; operate computer; enter data quickly and accurately; provide effective and timely Help Desk support; solve software problems in a prompt and effective manner.
Education:
COMPUTER SUPPORT SPECIALIST I
Any combination of training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying; typical experience would include an Associate of Arts degree from an accredited college, or relevant experience on a year for year basis in Computer Science or a relevant field.
COMPUTER SUPPORT SPECIALIST II
Any combination of training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying; typical experience would include an Associate of Arts degree from an accredited college, or equivalent experience in Computer Science or related field.
Experience:
COMPUTER SUPPORT SPECIALIST I
Typical experience would include one year of progressively responsible relevant experience with mainframe/midrange and personal computers software usage, and a basic understanding of structured programming language.
COMPUTER SUPPORT SPECIALIST II
Typical experience would include three years of progressively responsible relevant experience with mainframe/midrange and personal computers software usage, and a basic understanding of structured programming language and one year of experience in a lead capacity.
