The Traffic Operations Safety and Engineering Division of the Public Works Department is recruiting for a Traffic Engineer to work closely with Senior Engineers and Program Managers in support of transportation related functions and projects for the City of Redmond, in particular with Sound Transit's expansion of Light Rail to our community.
Mobility of people is what our engineers do. Our transportation system supports the City's vision for vibrant urban centers in Downtown and Overlake, connected neighborhoods and a sustainable community. And being a part of our team as a Traffic Engineer means working with people committed to studying and designing elements of the City infrastructure, keeping in mind the co-existing modes of transportation.
In addition to your engineering skills and passion to learn, your natural gift for explaining the technical to non-technical people will come in handy as you will be given plenty of opportunities to grow your communication skills with inspectors, engineers, and across departments.
While this role is focused on traffic operations and that experience is preferred, we are also interested in you if you have your E.I.T. and worked in transportation and civil engineering. In fact, we have a supplemental question where you can help us by sharing your other experience we should consider that gives you the knowledge and abilities to be considered for this role. We really see this position as a great opportunity for someone who is ready to advance in their career and get on-the-job experience, mentorship, and training that will further them as a civil engineer.

- Review engineering plans, reports, and calculations that are submitted by customers or consultants, including traffic signals, illumination, pavement, and curb ramps.
- Provide engineering research on complicated issues to assist Senior Engineers and Supervisors on decision making, including safety and collision analysis, traffic calming, Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), and traffic signal systems.
- Communicate in person, through e-mail, and on the telephone with City personnel, consultants, developers, contractors, other agencies, property owners, and the public to exchange information, resolve conflicts, and provide technical expertise as needed.
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering from an accredited college or university.
- Four (4) years traffic or transportation engineering experience.
- Or any equivalent combination of education, experience and training that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
- A Master's may substitute for two (2) years of experience
- Engineer-In-Training Certification.
- Valid Washington State Driver's License and a driving record that meets city standards.
