Under general supervision, is responsible for enforcing tree preservation and landscape ordinances by conducting field inspections. Exercises no supervision.
The Tree & Landscape Inspectors work in the field and will be exposed to multiple conditions and interactions with both nature and the public. An inspector will be exposed to weather conditions to include but not limited to extreme heat, cold, and wet environments. Work in the field will expose an inspector to natural elements to include but not limited to; wildlife, stinging/biting insects, plants that may cause allergic reactions and plants with thorns.

Work Hours
7:45 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., Monday - Friday
- Enforces tree preservation and landscape ordinances through field inspections.
- Conducts inspections on Certificates of Occupancies (C of O) for compliance with applicable ordinances.
- Conducts on-site investigations of reported violations and includes utilizing a camera and other equipment.
- Reviews tree preservation and landscape plans and conducts follow-up field inspections to insure tree maintenance is in compliance with ordinances and codes.
- Maintains reports, records, and logs of status of tree preservation and landscaping.
- Monitors land clearing activities inside City limits and extra territorial jurisdiction for compliance with tree preservation regulations.
- Issues notices or citations to correct code violations.
- Files court cases and testifies when necessary.
- Performs related duties and fulfills responsibilities as required.
- High school diploma or GED equivalent (recognized by the Texas Education Agency or a regional accrediting agency).
- Three (3) years of increasingly responsible experience in tree surveying, tree preservation, landscaping, and/or inspections.
- Valid Class 'C' Texas Driver's License.
- Master Naturalist Certification
- Native Plant Society Native Landscape Certification
- ISA Certified Arborist

- Unless otherwise stated, applicants are permitted to substitute two years of related full-time experience for one year of higher education or one year of related higher education for two years of experience in order to meet the minimum requirements of the job. One year of full-time experience is defined as 30 or more hours worked per week for 12 months. One year of higher education is defined as 30 credit hours completed at an accredited college or university.
- Applicants selected for employment with the City of San Antonio in this position must receive satisfactory results from pre-employment drug testing and background checks. If required for the position, a physical, motor vehicle record evaluation, and additional background checks may be conducted.
- Knowledge of tree preservation and landscape ordinances, policies, and rules.
- Knowledge of plants and trees.
- Knowledge of construction process.
- Skill in utilizing basic office equipment.
- Ability to interpret site plans, landscape plans, tree preservation plans, and surveys.
- Ability to maintain accurate records.
- Ability to accurately measure trees, square footage, and calculate needed requirements.
- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective public relationships with co-workers, supervisors, and the general public.
- Ability to perform all physical requirements of the position, with or without accommodations.
- Working conditions are in an outdoor environment with visits to development sites including exposure to temperature variations, damp/wet surfaces, dust, and high noise levels.
