JOB SUMMARY
Under direction of the Public Works Superintendent and the Public Works Supervisor, the Operator:
- Operates heavy equipment in compliance with the company operating safety policies and procedures.
- Conducts routine equipment inspections and preventative maintenance on equipment; maintains accurate records
- Follow appropriate standard operating procedures as guideline for operating and maintaining vehicle
- Responsible for safely moving equipment to and from job sites
- Responsible for hauling material (gravel, sand, etc.)
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Operation of Equipment Operate all heavy equipment in a safe and efficient way according to all policies, procedures and equipment instruction
- Perform daily safety and maintenance checks
- Clean equipment as scheduled and/or required
- Ensure equipment is safely and securely stored
- Advise the Public Works Shop Foreman and/or Maintenance Supervisor of any requirements for maintenance or repairs
- Participate in routine maintenance
- Practice workplace safety
- KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Verbal skills to communicate factual information to employees, Maintenance Supervisor, Public Works Superintendent, Mayor and the general public.
- Writing skills to prepare reports, procedures and articles and submits to Mayor, City Council, and various others.
- Reading skills to understand policies, manuals and information pertaining to the maintenance and operation of equipment.
- Knowledge of departmental and city rules, regulations, policies and procedures and State municipal law.
- Ability to deal with public in a pleasant and effective manner, and to maintain effective working relationships with the public, City Council, City Committees, and other governmental agencies.
- Knowledge and working expertise of word processing programs, spreadsheets, and other related software.
- Knowledge of safety practices, laws and guidelines.
- Ability to maneuver heavy equipment with shear/bucket/pulverizing attachments.
- The ability to work safely using heavy equipment around various structures.
- Ability to work safely at various job sites as required.
- Ability to follow all safety instructions.
- Ability to report to work on time and as scheduled.
- For Operator I, a minimum of 1 year of Equipment handling experience is required.
- For Operator II, 2-4 years of Equipment handling experience is required.
- For Operator III, 5 years of Equipment handling experience is required.
- OTHER CHARACTERISTICS Basic Qualifications: High School Degree
- Possess a valid driver’s license; A CDL is desired (for Operator II and III, a CDL is required);
- Will to work overtime or other non-standard hours when scheduled and agreed upon;
- Thoroughness in all phases of duties performed in order to utilize the most efficient organizational skills;
- Highly motivated individual who has ability to “multi-task” comfortably, work independently & efficiently, and maintains calm disposition;
- Willingness to occasionally, within reason, and when scheduled - work extra hours, weekends, etc.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
The work environment is typical of such places as offices, meeting and training rooms, warehouses, industrial type facilities, commercial vehicles, e.g. use of safe work practices all types of equipment.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Work can be sedentary to physically demanding. Incumbent must be able to walk over rugged terrain, lift up to 40 pounds, be in physically fit condition.
