Responsibilities:
- Under supervision, perform semi-skilled and heavy manual labor tasks in the following areas with Public Works:
- Operating and routine maintenance of trucks an light road construction equipment; use of hand tools and power tools commmonly used in public works maintenance work; safety practices and principles related to road construction and/or flood control work. Some knowledge of basic methods and materials used in road, bridge, and/or drainage maintenance work.
- Ability to work while standing for up to eight hours per day; understand and carry out oral and written instructions; use tools and equipment efficiently and safely; interact effectively with the public; work cooperatively with others as part of a crew; lift items weighing up to 75 pounds; perform tasks requiring strength, such as shoveling, lifting equiipment and materials into trucks, climb over rough terrain; use chain saws and pole saws; learn to operate heavy equipment, such as three-axle dump trucks, mowers, rollers, loaders and back hoes; distinguish colors, such as color-coded underground service alert markings and color-coded traffic signs; put on, wear, and use a respirator and other safety equipment such as hard hats, gloves, safety glasses, and ear protection; hear and distinguish various sounds such as voices of workers in noisy envoronments and sounds of operating equpment.
- Diagnose and repair automotive electrical systems.
- Conduct diesel engine repairs and maintenance.
- Estimate costs for automotive services and communicate with customers regarding repairs.
- Ensure all work is performed in accordance with safety standards and regulations.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Previous experience as an automotive technician or similar role.
- Strong knowledge of vehicle maintenance and repair techniques.
- Proficient in diagnosing and repairing automotive electrical systems.
- Familiarity with air brake systems.
- Ability to perform heavy lifting and physical tasks as required.
- Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
Physical Demands:
- In some positions incumbents will be required to performa heavy manual labor which may include such tasks as digging ditches; lifting and carrying of materials including, but not limited to, cement bags, sewer pipe, and sign posts; frequent walking and/or standing, arrying or throwing shovelfuls of paving material; working outdorrs in all types of local weather conditions.
Additional Skills:
- Experience with auto estimating software is a plus.
