BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE JOB: As a custodian, your primary responsibility is to maintain cleanliness, sanitation, and upkeep of assigned areas. Performs custodial and general maintenance work in and around city facilities. Duties include but are not limited to general cleaning including sweeping, moping, dusting, cleaning walls, windows, light fixtures, office equipment, outside ashtrays, and empty trash receptacles disposing of waste properly. You will also replenish supplies at facilities and report low inventory. Attention to detail and adherence to safety protocols are essential. You may need to operate cleaning equipment and use cleaning agents according to established guidelines. Additionally, you will be required to report maintenance issues or any safety hazards to the appropriate personnel.

Cleans, sanitizes and restocks restrooms. Operates buffers, strippers, waxers, vacuums, and carpet shampooing machines. Picks up trash and remove for proper disposal. Dusts, cleans bookshelves, tables, desks, and woodwork. Cleans glass doors, windows, door handles, and light plates. Picks up and delivers supplies, equipment, and/other goods. Monitors building security and safety by performing such tasks as locking doors after operating hours. Assists with the relocation of furniture, facility set-up for special functions, parties and meetings. Performs such other duties as may be assigned. Provides quality customer service to city staff, the general public, and all other work contacts.
Qualifications
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:
- Knowledge of general janitorial methods and techniques.
- Knowledge of the various equipment, materials, and products used in janitorial maintenance.
- Ability to follow verbal and written directions.
- Ability to operate equipment for long periods of time.
- Ability to physically work hard for long periods of time.
- Ability to push, shove, lift, pull and physically handle heavy objects for short periods of time.
- Ability to frequently exert forces equivalent to lifting up to 25 pounds and occasionally exerting forces equivalent to lifting up to 50 pounds.
- Strong communications skills and ability to work well within a team.
- Ability to understand and follow safety protocols.
- Attention to detail and commitment to maintaining cleanliness.
Reading: Read and comprehend operation and safety manuals; signs, maps, office memos, labels, blueprints, etc.
Writing: Ability to take notes and messages
Reasoning: Ability to assess problems and make prompt, reliable repairs and determine safe solutions
ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: High school graduate, or its equivalent; Six months experience in janitorial maintenance preferred. OR any combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
CERTIFICATES/LICENSES REQUIRED: State of Texas Class C driver’s license.
