The Public Relations Specialist II position serves as a liaison with all media outlets and conducts specialized administrative support work for the Chief of Police and executive staff. This work involves freeing the supervisor to focus on the critical demands by performing a variety of support and administrative functions with independence and discretion under minimal direction relating to coordination of public and media relations and social media.
Primary duties include:
- Perform liaison and public relations assignments dealing with other departments, divisions, public and all local media outlets.
- Works in conjunction with the City Communications Department to coordinate training for Police Department personnel on media and public relations and marketing.
- Coordinate the release of information about victims, witnesses and suspects.
- Coordinate press conferences, meetings, special programs and events for the department.
- Work with media to present positive stories about the department and promote cooperative effort between citizens and police, and market the police department in the community.
- Promotes the image of the Topeka Police Department and employees through many media channels by progressively updating websites, social media and the issuing of media releases in a timely manner.
Minimum qualifications: Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in communications, business, public administration or related field. A combination of education and experience that is equivalent to the minimum qualifications is acceptable. Must have at least two years of experience in advertising, public relations marketing, broadcasting, journalism, or a related field, including experience in writing copy, developing advertising layouts, making public presentations, reporting editing or media relations. Must possess and maintain a valid KS driver’s license and City insurable driving record.
Annual entry salary: $47,646 - $53,713 DOQ
