POSITION DUTIES AND QUALIFICATIONS
SUMMARY OF DUTIES:
Assist with and learn a range of development review functions and will be trained in building inspection. The trainee program is a structured program typically lasting for two years and involves instruction plus on-the-job training and work performance. Appropriate progress and successful completion of the training program is required for continuation in this classification. Upon successful completion of the prescribed training program and acquiring the required licenses and certifications, trainees will be eligible for appointment as Building Inspector II.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: *
Position Specific Summary
The Building Inspector I position at the City of Tucson’s Planning and Development Services Department assists in conducting building inspections for construction, manufactured buildings, plumbing, electrical and mechanical equipment, and systems to ensure conformance to building codes, plans, and regulatory standards. This position assists in reviewing plans and completing building inspection reports in an online permitting system and participates in the Building Inspection Trainee Program.
Work is performed under the supervision of the Building Inspection Supervisor. This position does not supervise.
Duties and Responsibilities
Inspections (45%) – Essential
Assists in conducting building inspections with guidance from senior staff, via video and on site for new construction, manufactured buildings, plumbing, electrical, mechanical equipment and systems to ensure conformance to adopted building codes, regulations, plans and regulatory standards. Identifies and documents non-compliance issues and verifies corrections have been completed by re-inspection process.
Record Keeping (20%) – Essential
Enters inspection data correctly into permitting system and follows up with emails to permit holders as needed. Documents permit system with department notes as required.
Plan Review (20%) – Essential
Reads and interprets blueprints and other construction documents for inspection purposes.
Customer Service (5%) – Essential
Collects information on customer concerns while maintaining respect and integrity. Assists with researching permit issue matters, addresses the inquiry by returning customer calls, emails, and schedules inspections for customer. Seeks supervisor guidance, as needed.
Equipment Maintenance & Safety Oversight (5%) – Essential
Monitors assigned City vehicle maintenance, ensures proper PPE is maintained. Ensures safety protocols are always followed in the office and in the field.
Other duties as assigned (5%) – Non-Essential
Performs all other duties and tasks as assigned.
Working Conditions
This position requires frequent driving to inspection sites and frequent exposure to outdoor locations to perform field inspections.
