Seeking detail-oriented, organized, professional candidates who love Seniors and possess excellent customer service and communication skills.

This Recreation Leader IV (G10) position will primarily oversee the City’s Out & About Transportation Program and Culture Caravan Program for adult and/or senior activities and excursions.  The incumbent will be responsible for the daily organization, supervision and implementation of the assigned recreational program including leisure activities, special events, and social service programs.  The Recreation Leader IV also has greater accountability for the planning and evaluation of programs and the supervision of other recreation leaders at lower classification levels. This position reports to the Community Services Program Manager in our Senior Center.  

Note: Incumbents are required to work a flexible schedule, including some evenings, holidays and weekends.
Assists the program manager with the planning and implementation of recreation programs; supervises children, organizes games and activities; monitors field rentals and recreation programming during evening hours; sets up and breaks down tables, chairs, and play areas, performs a variety of minor maintenance; organizes and sets up recreation activities and leads games, social activities, and arts and crafts programs; explains rules and procedures and officiates games; maintains and sets up equipment and facilities, performs minor equipment maintenance and repairs; provides technical direction to less experienced recreational staff; orders supplies, materials and equipment; manages, coordinates or instructs participants as to program guidelines; prepares basic activity reports; supervises, schedules and evaluates the work of part-time staff and programs at Senior Facilities, or major recreation facilities; ensures adherence with program policies and procedures and safety standards; prepares and maintains reports, correspondence and logs related to attendance, work hours, accidents, incidents, and program and staff evaluations; maintain records and files; answer phones; deliver mail; may prepare and report on program activities and may assist with the program budget.Any combination of training, education, and experience which demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position is qualifying.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
A typical qualifying background would include high school diploma or GED equivalent and three (3) years of part-time recreation experience, or three summers of full-time experience, including work involving the supervision of other recreation staff.  College coursework in a related field is highly desirable.

LICENSES:
  • Possession of a valid California Class C Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record is required. 
  • CPR and First Aid certificates may be required.
KNOWLEDGE OF:
Supervisory principles and practices; budgeting techniques; recreational play, games, activities and rules; health and safety requirements; recreational objectives and organization of programs for specialized groups of participants, including knowledge of program themes and user needs; leadership techniques; social, physical and physiological development cycles of children, seniors, and special age groups; event planning, organization and communications; modern office equipment and computer operation, including word processing, spreadsheet, database, and graphics applications; program evaluation methods; and principles and practices of public relations.

SKILL IN:
Setting up and disassembling activities and assembly areas.

Learn, understand, instruct, and conduct activities of assigned program; establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff and with diversified population groups having varied needs and expectations; maintain and implement standards, procedures and disciplinary controls; foster good sportsmanship and initiate fair play; handle emergency and safety situations decisively and appropriately; deal effectively and courteously with the public; understand and carry out oral and written instructions; keep records and prepare reports, forms and other correspondence; communicate, explain, interpret and enforce safety rules and regulations and operational policies clearly and in a courteous manner to the public, volunteers and other employees; supervise part-time employees and volunteers; effectively communicate orally and in writing; maintain accurate records; and operate a City vehicle observing defensive driving techniques.PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS:

While performing the duties of this class, the employee is regularly required to communicate effectively verbally and in a written manner; observe and interpret data, and analyze and solve problems. The employee must be able to work indoor office environments/outdoor in the field environments (depending on position); employees may work outside in all weather conditions and must wear standard apparel as prescribed by the Parks and Community Services Department.

The employee may have to move up to 50 lbs. and transport up to 10 lbs. objects frequently (depending on position). Vision abilities required by this job include the ability to detect, determine, perceive, identify, estimate, and assess work related objects and/or work products based on position specific designated tasks.  The employee may be required to work overtime to complete assignments. Must be able to work a flexible schedule; must be able to work extended hours outdoors and rotate shifts, including weekends, and holidays. Use of personal vehicle during employment may also be required.
