The City of Wheaton is seeking a creative Public Relations Coordinator to join our team in the Communications Department. Reporting to the Public Information Officer, this position creates and coordinates public relations information in accordance with the City’s missions and objectives, and uses multiple platforms; including the City’s website, social media and print materials, to share consistent and pertinent City communications with our resident base and the general public.
Essential Job Functions:
Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Gather information for, write, design and distribute City communications including weekly and monthly newsletters.
- Coordinate press releases, social media posts, website updates, etc. to communicate facts, news and information about the City, its Boards & Commissions and other related affiliates and agencies.
- Design printed publications and other materials; coordinate the production, mailing and distribution of external and internal materials printed in-house and by outside vendors. Work with City departments and Boards & Commissions to develop campaigns that promote programs and services.
- Create graphic design projects as necessary and make recommendations on how to effectively reach target audience, including the use of new platforms and technologies.
- Regularly update website, including all content for the news section, and events for City calendar.
- Work with studio staff to promote new programming and provide information and graphics to be viewed on TV Channels 10 and 17.
- Assist with City’s social media initiatives and create new content for social media platforms. Monitor social media accounts and respond to inquiries in a timely manner.
- Attend City Council Planning Session meetings (twice monthly) and write minutes.Review City Council meeting recordings within 24 hours for digital broadcasting.
- Assist with speech and public announcement preparation, as well as design multimedia presentations for Mayor and other City staff as required.
- Ensure consistency and unified branding across multiple platforms by writing/rewriting using plain language and AP Style, creating graphics and infographics for print and digital communications and assist City departments with creating style compliant templates as needed.
- Provide exceptional customer service in order to promote and maintain a positive City image, constructive working environment, and foster pride and professionalism in the workplace and community.
Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism or related field, or 4 years of experience in Public Relations or related field. Proficiency with Microsoft suite, graphic design programs (InDesign, Photoshop) and Content Management Systems (CMS), and AP Style writing preferred. Strong interpersonal communication skills (written and verbal) for interaction with elected and appointed officials, employees, agencies and other governmental units, and the public. Other combinations of education and experience, which could provide the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform this job, may be considered. A Valid Driver’s License is required.
Salary: The starting salary for this position is $60,225.
