What are the responsibilities and job description for the City Surveyor position at City of Winston-Salem?
Under immediate supervision, performs difficult technical and administrative work in overseeing surveying activities in the Engineering Department; does related work as required.
Schedules, assigns and supervises the work of survey parties engaged in the collection of survey data to be used in the construction of City streets, drainage, utilities and related improvement projects; compiles survey data for the preparation of strip maps of right-of-way and easements and plotting of topographical improvement plans; requests survey information from private engineers and surveys as required; maintains survey information record files; personally directs the more complex engineering and land surveys; consults with builders or contractors on problems relating to construction projects; locates and informs property owners of scheduled survey work.
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to an associate degree in engineering, drafting or surveying and extensive experience of a responsible nature in sub-professional engineering work. Comprehensive knowledge of the principles, practices and techniques of land surveying and related engineering work; comprehensive knowledge of the use of surveying and drafting instruments; knowledge of the materials, methods and techniques of public works construction; ability to prepare drawings from field notes and plats of records, ability to plan and supervise the work of others; ability to make independent investigations of problems relating to public works construction activities; ability to prepare detailed reports and to maintain records.
Applicant must possess a valid driver's license.
Applicant must possess a NC Professional Land Surveying License that is active and in good standing.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: (Reasonable accommodations may substitute for physical requirements listed): Must be able to maneuver consistently within the office area and be able to work with small and large objects; must possess excellent communication skills. This position will work indoors and outdoors and may be exposed to repetitive motion/operations and long periods of sitting.
