What are the responsibilities and job description for the Buyer position at Cleveland Cliffs?
Cleveland-Cliffs Steel has an immediate opening for a Scrap Metal Buyer in the Raw Materials Department located in Cleveland or West Chester, OH. The ideal candidate will provide assistance in maintaining the supply chain of Scrap Metal to our steel production facilities, as well as developing and managing relationships with suppliers. The Buyer will interface with Accounting, Engineering, Logistics and Department Managers from each Cleveland-Cliffs’ Facility as well as their peers from the Raw Materials organizations.
Summary of Responsibilities:
Primary point of contact for suppliers, including assisting in writing and managing, contracts, RFQ’s, scheduling shipments, issuing purchase orders, negotiating pricing; monitoring quality, and performance; and assisting in the resolution of payment and invoicing issues.
Primary point of contact for personnel at our steel production facilities that consume these raw materials. The Buyer must develop a working relationship with various plant personnel in order to understand their needs while achieving the most cost effective options for the organization.
Continuously strive to reduce costs and obtain best value for Cleveland-Cliffs through optimization of purchased materials and identifying alternative/substitute materials.
Maintain and monitor various raw material inventory trackers to ensure adequate supply to the facilities while managing working capital.
Increase the supplier base and initiate trials of new products and new suppliers at our production facilities.
Keep abreast of market conditions as to availability, price, freights and quality on a monthly basis.
Compile, develop, and analyze data, via Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint, for the compilation of various reports.
Authorized to negotiate purchase orders on a monthly and annual basis. Oversite and direction will be provided by the Category Manager.
Seek input from management and Legal on contract requirements and purchasing issues in a timely fashion.
Keep management aware of situations and propose action plans towards resolution.
Follow department policies and procedures, and participate in activities to continuously improve department workflow.
Occasional travel required to visit suppliers, production facilities and to attend industry conferences (Travel Requirements less than 20%).
Minimum Qualifications:
BS or BA in Business, Finance, Economics, Engineering or other business-related field or a minimum of 3 years of relevant analytical experience in negotiations.
Ability to define problems, collect & analyze data, establish facts and draw conclusions.
Must possess high ethical standards and the ability to work within our Company’s Code of Ethics and Business Policies.
Ability to build rapport with others in the work environment.
Ability to understand Legal aspects of Procurement.

Preferred Qualifications:
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, adept at managing conflict to resolution, detail oriented and willingness to advance within the department.
Experience in an industrial or manufacturing environment – an understanding of the steelmaking processes and raw materials is a plus.
Proficient in Microsoft 365 Products especially Excel, Word, Outlook, Power Point, etc.; knowledge of Tabware, Oracle, Hyperion, Power BI or Axiom is a plus.
Sound logical, analytical, and quantitative skills.
