Paramedics provide emergency treatment, including advanced life support, to patients in emergencies. The Paramedic's role is to assess the urgent medical needs of patients and stabilize their conditions. Paramedics are the most highly trained emergency medical responders. A caregiver in this Day/Evening rotation works 12-hour shift on variable days. 11:00 am – 11:00 pm A caregiver who excels in this role will: Provide duties that assist in providing patient care in the Emergency Department under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse. Obtain and record vital signs. Perform EKGs, CPR, phlebotomy and oral, nasal and ET suctioning. Initiate cardiac monitoring, oxygen therapy and saline locks. Notify the RN and/or physician of rhythm changes. Apply orthopaedic appliances and simple splints. Size crutches and teach crutch walking. Assist with equipment setup, chest tubes, gastric lavage, LP, etc. Assist with restraint and seclusion of patients and apply restraint devices. Transport patients and specimens. Assist with sterile procedures and cleaning and maintaining supplies and equipment. Maintain confidentiality and respect patient privacy. Perform fluid/drug administration. Minimum qualifications for the ideal caregiver include: Completion of an accredited EMS-Paramedic training program. Current licensure as an Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedic (EMTP) in the current State. Basic Life Support (BLS) through American Heart Association (AHA). Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) through American Heart Association (AHA). Preferred qualifications for the ideal caregiver include: International Trauma Life Support (ITLS). If in an ED, Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) through American Heart Association (AHA) upon hire or within one year of beginning work in the Emergency Department. Medium Work - Exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
