General Description
Under the direction of the Athletic Director, the Assistant Athletic Trainer will provide health services involving injury prevention, immediate care, and management/disposition and reconditioning of athletic injuries.

Job Duties
Job duties of the Assistant Athletic Trainer will include:
  • Serve as Certified Athletic Trainer for assigned sports team.
  • Administer conditioning and rehabilitation treatment by use of massage, exercise, water, heat, cold, compression, light, sound and electricity and other related therapy as requested by licensed physician.
  • Provide initial evaluation and emergency first aid to athletes requiring care, including determination of needed treatment level.
  • Inform coaching staff of the severity of athletic injuries incurred by athletes and their ability to resume practice or re-enter competition
  • Advise coaches, athletes and students regarding severity of injury, diet, exercise, minerals and fluid intake, reconditioning and other related matters; counsel and advise athletes and coaches concerning development of physical conditioning and training programs to enhance an athletes strength, endurance, flexibility and coordination.
  • Maintain student athletes' health records; assist with team health screening examinations; maintain inventory of equipment, supplies and medications; prepares orders for medical and athletic training supplies.
  • Arrange screening, referral and transportation of injured athletes to physician or hospital as necessary; advise and arrange appointments and consultations for students, as required, for services not available through the established health care athletic training services program.
  • Protect athletes from trauma or re-injury by checking uniform for proper fit in conjunction with selecting, fabricating, designing and fitting appropriate splints, pads or other protective devices.
  • Under direction provide therapy, design and supervise conditioning and reconditioning programs.
  • Provide pre-practice, practice, and post practice services for assigned sports.
  • Provide coverage of all home contests assigned may travel with team to road contests, as assigned.
  • Attend and participate in physical education and athletic department meetings.
  • Assist in the supervision of student Athletic trainers within the Sports Medicine Program.
  • Prepare, maintain and compile monthly and yearly injury report summaries and treatments provided to all athletes.
  • Prepare and maintain reports related to training supplies and equipment inventory; prepare requisitions as needed.
  • Perform related work as assigned.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications (Education & Experience):

Any combination equivalent to:

Bachelor's degree in Physical Education or Kinesiology preferably with an emphasis on athletic training/sports medicine or a National Athletic Trainers Association Board of Certification and one-year experience in athletic training.

Licenses and Other Requirements:
  • Current CPR/AED Certificate.
  • Maintain certified with National Athletic Trainers Association and fulfill the continuing education requirements to maintain certification during period of employment.
  • Valid Class III California's Driver's License.
  • Must be eligible to obtain a Class B Driver's License.
  • An incumbent must be insurable at the "standard rate" by the employer's insurance carrier at all times while employed in this classification by the College of the Sequoias Community College District.

  • Ability to speak clearly, distinctly to ask questions, and to provide information.
  • Ability to hear and understand voices over the telephone and in person and respond quickly and effectively to emergencies.
  • Ability to see and hear adequately to perform accurate physical assessments of athletes.
  • Ability to lift injured, ill, or disabled students.

Knowledge and Abilities

The hiring committee is seeking evidence of the following:

Knowledge of:
  • Health issues, needs and concerns of college athletes.
  • Human anatomy and physiology.
  • Universal health and safety precautions.
  • Emergency medical response and triage protocol.
  • Assessment and diagnostic techniques.
  • First aid, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), AED and CPR procedures.
  • Injuries or conditions, which require special corrective measures.
  • Equipment and devices required in therapeutic rehabilitation.
  • Oral and written communication skills.
  • Interpersonal skills including tact, patience and diplomacy.
  • Use of microcomputer equipment.

Ability to:
  • Evaluate injuries and apply appropriate care/preventative measures.
  • Maintain accurate health records; insurance forms and inventory sheets.
  • Communicate effectively with students, coaches, staff and community.
  • Provide health care services including emergency care.
  • Perform first aid procedures and CPR/AED.
  • Participate in health education and awareness activities for athletes.
  • Operate office and microcomputer equipment.
  • Establish and maintain effective and cooperative working relationships with others.
  • Relate effectively with people of varied academic, cultural and socio-economic background using tact, diplomacy and courtesy.
  • Work independently with minimal supervision.
