Veterinary Teaching Hospital (VTH)
At the CSU VTH, we educate the next generation of veterinarians by providing exceptional veterinary care and service to the community every day. The Small Animal Intermediate Care (IMCU) Unit is an integral part of the Colorado State University Veterinary Teaching Hospital providing exceptional nursing care to patients needing outpatient recovery services and those who need hospitalization for specialized care without critical care resources. This unit provides services to all small animal areas of the hospital, as part of the teaching facility for veterinary students, as a medical facility for veterinary research, and as a public animal health care center for exotic, large and small animals.

Position Summary
This Veterinary Technician position provides patient care for clinical equine cases in the Critical Care, Medicine, and Surgery & Lameness services. This position requires a knowledge of various medical procedures, biosecurity surveillance, and proper equipment usage; with the ability to make independent decisions and observations relating to patient management and patient care process. This position will collaborate with team members for case management on a daily basis to allow for continuity of patient care throughout this 24 hour/day service. Additionally, this position provides direction of junior and senior veterinary students and their responsibilities related to patient care within the equine hospital, as well as Veterinary Technician students, within their responsibilities related to patient care in the equine hospital. This role will be supervised by the Equine Medicine Unit nursing supervisor.

The successful candidate must be legally authorized to work in the United States by the proposed start date; the department will not provide visa sponsorship for this position.

This is an essential worker position and must be willing and able to report to work as directed to perform essential and/or emergency services without delay or interruption.

This position typically works overnights and weekends but may be asked to adjust to meet the needs of the department and university.

A signing bonus of $2,500 and/or moving expenses may be considered for eligible and successful candidates.

Required Job Qualifications
  • An associate’s degree from an accredited college or university in veterinary/animal health technology. Two years of experience as defined by the department will substitute for each year of required education. A bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral degree from an accredited college or university in veterinary/animal health technology will substitute for the associate’s degree and, at the agency’s discretion, the year of experience.
AND
  • One year of experience assisting in animal surgery, administering anesthesia to animals and/or performing veterinary surgery.

  • Must have the ability to safely and proficiently handle horses and foals for medical procedures and evaluations. Minimum 1 year of equine experience.

  • Registered as a Veterinary Technician (RVT) or Provisional Veterinary Technician (PVT) through the Department of Regulatory Agencies (DORA), or eligibility to obtain a state of Colorado DORA license by start date.

  • Credentialed in the State of Colorado or other eligible state determined by CACVT.

Equine Hospital and Critical Care Nursing

Duty/Responsibility
  • Provides nursing and technical support within the collaborative effort of the team of veterinary technicians and clinical faculty by performing nursing best practices on equine veterinary patients, while instructing veterinary students with proper technique of various medical procedures. These include; proper collection and understanding of normal and abnormal hematology values, proper collection and administration of whole blood and plasma, venipuncture, intramuscular and subdermal injections, oral administration of medication, IV catheterization and maintenance, fluid administration and maintenance, proper placement and usage of nasogastric tubes including refluxing technique, electro diagnostic procedures, endoscopy and related procedures, blood pressure Doppler measurements, EKG, abdominocentesis, cystocentesis, ophthalmic treatments, proper assessment and understanding of parameter values, therapeutic management and diagnostic sample submission within equine critical care, emergency medicine, internal medicine, soft tissue and orthopedic cases.
  • Provides nursing and technical support for Equine Emergency Critical Care by providing critical thinking and skill sets sought by the team to be applied to a variety of equine emergency situations and cases. To include the scope of; basic colic work up, lacerations, infectious diseases, isolation care and critically, life threatening cases.
  • Instruct and support PVM students with respect to their assigned equine patients offering experience, skill set, and knowledge of nursing care for the critical and non-critical patients, neonatal, soft tissue and orthopedic cases. Providing instruction for catheter application and care, sepsis recognition, post-operative complication awareness, as well as pain management observation and recognition. Have complete confidence understanding equine behavior in order to safely administer chemical or manual restraint when necessary within a hospital or stressful environment.
  • Communicate with clientele and offer community support and education in basic veterinary care following surgery or procedures. Provide comfort and basic grief counseling during “end of life decisions”. Be an advocate for the veterinary team by communicating the needs of the client to the veterinary team and vice versa.
  • Collaborates work duties or tasks within the nursing team in order to continue to provide an efficient working and harmonious hospital environment, while providing best standard of care practice within the equine hospital.

Instruct, Senior PVM Student Orientation and Medical Records

Duty/Responsibility
  • Provides hands-on, basic equine veterinary education for DVM equine rotations and FRCC veterinary technician students. Assist in the instruction of DVM students, FRCC students, intern, and residents to the systems or procedures used (Cubex, Chimera) within the Equine services. Position follows and maintains IACUC records on an as needed basis. This position operates within standard guidelines and alternatives that are known, and deviation requires prior approval.
  • Medical Records: This position is responsible for maintaining ongoing supply, procedure, hospital/patient care level and surgery charges onto each client invoice. Makes daily charging entries to invoices to reflect accurate charging. Works closely with attending clinicians and residents to meet and achieve proper procedure charging on each case to successfully caption procedures and materials.

  • This position is responsible for biosecurity awareness by leading by example and educating clients within the Equine barn. Learn process to appropriately clean and store equipment between uses to protect biosecurity of equipment. Participate in the annual process of deep cleaning of the equine hospital. Uphold information presented to DVM and FRCC students within orientation that includes basic knowledge of the working function of the main hospital and equine isolation unit.
