Position: Cancer Genetic Counselor
Job Duties:
- Educate patients about familial cancer, provide clear options for medical and surgical interventions and enhance quality of life for high-risk cancer patients via telegenetic counseling.
- Work closely with the Dignity Health physicians and genetic counselors to assure patient genetic testing is appropriate and approached in such a manner that aligns with the Dignity Health Human kindness values
- Understand insurance billing for the service and options for payment or charity care for the uninsured.
- Maintain detailed records of patient information (including pedigrees, consultative reports, telephone communications and other notes) for analysis and reporting.
- Collaborate with other care team members (such as physicians, nurses, nurse navigators, psychosocial counselor) to maintain a high level of continuity of care and improve outcomes.
- Maintain knowledge of current trends and developments in genetic counseling and epidemiology of disease by earning CEUs specific for oncology genetics.
- Serve as a required member of Cancer Committee at the Dignity Health Sacramento Service Area Hospitals and attend weekly tumor board meetings.
- Work under the guidance of a physician with genetic training, and the direction of the Clinical Director of the Oncology Service Line.
Salary: $87,000 - $107,000 /year
Work Schedule: 40 hours/week
Job Requirements:
Education Requirements: Master’s Degree in Genetic Counseling, or closely related
Experience Requirements: 1 years of experience in job offered, Genetic Counselor, or closely related
Special skills requirements:
- Experience counseling women of childbearing age about preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) and additional options for hereditary cancer conditions in person as well through telegenetic counseling
- Experience in genetic counseling and case management of patients in the prenatal setting
- Experience with the assessment of referral indications for the high-risk pregnancy clinic, specifically regarding genetic counseling recommendations.
- Experience in the collaboration with referring physicians and perinatologists during the preparation and follow-up of consultations with patients and couples in a pregnancy setting, as well as patient with previous, current and risk of genetic predisposed cancer.
- Experience with genetic risk assessment based on personal and family history and adapting counseling of genetic implications to meet individual needs
- Experience with the coordination of genetic testing, result disclosures, follow-up counseling and recommendations, as well as referrals to outside facilities
- Experience serving as psychosocial support to patients and family members in a pregnancy setting, as well as patient with previous, current and risk of genetic predisposed cancer.
- Experience with the continuous evaluation of genetic testing laboratories and product development based on genetic testing availability in order to provide patients with the most cost-effective and appropriate option based on testing indication.
- Must have completed a Telegenetics Training Course
- Must be American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC) certified Genetic Counselor
- Must have a Genetic Counselor License issued by the State of California
