Job Duties

VDOT's Madison area headquarters, located in Madison County, Virginia is seeking a skilled operator/motivated leader to serve as a maintenance crew leader.

As a Maintenance Crew Leader, you will:
*Work closely with supervisors to identify maintenance needs.
*Develop schedules, plan work, and determine resources needed to execute work assignments.
*Assign work tasks, order materials, and determine equipment needed to accomplish tasks.
*Provide guidance and training to crew performing highway maintenance activities such as clearing drainage, removing debris, cutting brush, and patching roads.
*Lead crews, set up work zones, perform traffic control, and focus on workplace safety.
*Champion safety and continuously monitor work operations to ensure the safety of crew and that work complies with agency safety standards.
*Operate equipment such as dump trucks, backhoes, graders, rollers, and loaders.
*Train crew in the safety operation of equipment.
*Maintain work accomplishments and serve as a backup supervisor as needed.
*Will work during emergencies. You will lead crews during emergencies that block roads such as traffic accidents and storm debris. You will provide traffic control and perform activities necessary to reopen the road.
*During severe weather, you will prepare for events, lead others, and operate equipment for snow and ice removal and other types of hazardous weather affecting road conditions. Severe weather shifts are typically 12 hours and may include weekends, holidays, and after normal business hours.

Minimum Qualifications

*Knowledge of highway maintenance and/or construction practices and procedures.
*Entry-level experience in directing, training, or leading others and work activities.
*Familiar with inventory practices or procedures.
*Basic computer experience
*Skilled in operating and maintaining equipment used in highway activities. Equipment used may include dump trucks, graders, loaders, skid steer, and power/hand tools.
*Experience performing manual labor.
*Experience or the ability to interpret and apply work zone safety and traffic control guidelines.
*Valid Commerical Driver's License required. If not licensed at the time of hire, must obtain within 11 months of employment.

Additional Considerations

*Experience in working or leading emergency operations, including snow/ice removal, storm damage, and accident clean-up.
*Experience preparing computerized reports or work accomplishments.
*Current possession of Class A CDL
*Current possession of DEQ Erosion and Sediment Control Responsible Land Disturber Certification.
*Current certification in basic or intermediate work zones

Position requires unrestricted mobility, working in all types of weather, and terrain, and standing for long periods. Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds. Requires approved safety shoes, which is a reimbursable expense.

Fingerprint-based background checks, references, work history, and DMV records will be verified prior to employment. Selected applicants holding a valid CDL must complete a pre-employment physical and drug screen, otherwise, applicants will be required to complete a pre-employment physical.

Applicants must be eligible to work in the United States. H1B VISA Sponsorship is not available.

VDOT utilizes a market-based pay program, which has been approved by DHRM. Therefore, advertised rates of pay may or may not align with the Commonwealth pay bands.

All drivers hired without a valid CDL in hand are required to obtain their CDL within 11 months of their hire date as you cannot operate commercial motor vehicles prior to receiving the necessary licensure and medical certification. Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) regulations require entry-level drivers (drivers who are seeking to take the skills test in order to obtain a CDL for the first time, upgrade their CDL to a Class A from a Class B, or take the knowledge test to obtain a hazardous materials endorsement for the first time) to complete FMCSA- approved Entry-Level Driving (ELD) Training before the Department of Motor Vehicles can grant the requested CDL or endorsement. The course is comprised of 160 hours, on average, of training. VDOT is willing to assist with your enrollment in and payment for the course upon your acceptance of an ELD Training Tuition tenure and repayment agreement.
