About this position

The Virginia School for the Deaf and the Blind is seeking a Student Life Coordinator. This position provides communication and coordination of information between residential and educational programs, parents, staff, and students. As well, it provides all clerical, purchasing, and accounting support for the residential program.

This is a 10-month, classified position with state benefits, including health insurance, retirement, life insurance, and disability coverage.

The beginning date for this position is the beginning of our next school year in July 2024.

Job Duties

Communication and Information Services

  • Provides prompt, courteous communication services and serves as a communication base for the entire school.
  • Coordinates information between the school and dormitory, the dormitory and home, and administration and staff.
  • Provides prompt, appropriate action in crisis situations, following policies and procedures and administration direction, to ensure the safety and well being of all students.
  • Provides communication link for response for all crisis situations by maintaining contact information for all staff and calling appropriate personnel, i.e. Superintendent, hospital, counseling facility, etc.
  • Accurately interprets school policies and procedures and documents all contact/situations in a daily log.

• Office Management

• Coordination of Transportation Services

  • Coordinates transportation for weekly home going activities to include developing transportation sheets, making changes to schedules according to needs, establishing designated stops, keeping infirmary, bus drivers, kitchen and dormitory staff informed of schedules, managing transportation books and supplies, updating directions and serving as contact for parents and dormitory staff.
  • Coordinates requests and assignments for cars and buses for staff use, manages keys, and keeps track of staff licenses and DMV checks.
  • Maintains notebooks to coordinate the vehicle requests, assigns vehicles to staff and checks to be sure drivers have appropriate licenses. Reviews policies pertaining to vehicle usage.
  • Maintains bus bags with essential items and makes sure all plans are complete for homegoing trips.
  • Potentially in the event of an emergency, assists in transportation of students in state vehicles, school buses and charter buses, which includes acting as the driver of such vehicles as needed and appropriate. Includes transportation to specified locations during emergency situations. Must submit driving records to VSDB.

• Assists with budget issues, prepares purchase requisitions, monitors residential spending and keeps the director informed.
• Demonstrates ability to follow school policies, procedures and practices including dependability and punctuality in attendance and completion of job tasks.
• Demonstrates integrity and professionalism in interactions with students, parents, LEAs, fellow employees and others.
• Demonstrates individual and team problem solving skills.
• Demonstrates ability to work in a manner which keeps students and staff safe and promotes safety in the workplace.
• Participates in staff development and performance of other school functions and duties.
• Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality.

Minimum Qualifications

• High School diploma or General Education Development Certificate (GED).
• Considerable office management or secretarial experience.
• Must be able to complete all required training according to stated due dates or as scheduled in accordance with the directives of the Department Head and/or direct supervisor.
• Current CPR and First Aid certification is required or must be obtained in accordance with school policy.
• Valid Virginia Driver’s license with driving record that reflects sense of responsibility for highway and passenger safety.
• Knowledge of office management procedures, standard English grammar, spelling, punctuation, and basic math.
• Advanced computer skills to include proficiency in Google Suite or MS Office applications.
• Knowledge of records management procedures sufficient to prepare and maintain records.
• Good organizational, communication and interpersonal skills
• Ability to develop and modify residential work schedules.
• Willingness to work various shifts during emergencies and/or agency needs.
• Ability to work independently and follow school policies and procedures.
• Proficiency level of “Advanced” in American Sign Language as measured by the Sign Language Proficiency Scale or ability to acquire the specified level within three years.
• Ability to communicate effectively both orally and written.

Physical requirements:
• Ability to interact on a physical level with individuals and perform repetitive motion to include standing, sitting, reaching, lifting, walking, bending and climbing.
• Ability to supervise and assist with the transportation of individuals via buses or other vehicles to ensure safety and appropriate conduct.
• Ability to monitor individuals during transportation and drive state vehicles in order to transport students to and from the school campus as needed.
