POSITION OVERVIEW:
The Concord Food Co-op is accepting applications for General Manager. This is the most key position in the operation of the Co-op. The General Manager is responsible for the daily operations of the Co-ops in both locations (Concord & New London) by directing and guiding each respective Store Manager and the staff within each location. The General Manager will also be responsible for all aspects of the financial health of the Co-op. The General Manager reports to the Board on a regular basis through the use of policy monitoring reports. The General Manager has the authority to use any interpretation of these policies that the GM and Board deem reasonable.

The General Manager’s performance is evaluated through systematic monitoring of expectations established in the governance policies on asset protection, financial conditions and budgeting, business planning, people and culture, treatment of customers, shareholder equity and benefits, communication and support to the board, board logistical support, and emergency management succession.

Primary responsibilities:

  • Serve as the leader of the store and work closely with store managers and department managers.
  • Build and lead teams of employees.
  • Foster a good working environment for all employees.
  • Communicate and interact with all staff in a fair and forthright manner.
  • Operate within the policies authorized by the Board.
  • Maintain the financial health of the Co-op in line with the store’s goals and policies.
  • Develop and operate within a detailed financial plan; provide information and monthly monitoring reports to the Board that are timely, complete, and accurate.
  • Provide a high level of customer service to all owners and customers and ensure we are meeting the needs of our stakeholders.
  • Maintain the operations of the store and its equipment, including the overall look and appearance.
  • Ensure that compensation and benefits reflect the integrity of all work done at the Co-op, taking into account market conditions, regional comparisons, and internal needs.
  • Manage projects that are essential to the Co-op’s current and/or future operations and goals.

  • Problem-solving: Accurately diagnoses root causes of issues and correctly identifies appropriate resolution.
  • Visioning: Creates and communicates a compelling vision with goals. Uses data to demonstrate accomplishment.
  • Experience managing people: Makes good hiring decisions. Evaluates, inspires, recognizes, delegates work and provides feedback. Provides timely coaching and guidance. Experience managing managers.

Desired Qualifications

  • 5 years of experience in retail grocery or food services management
  • Experience managing financial statements and projections.
  • Experience managing a top-level management team.
  • Previous experience creating and developing effective procedural standards.
  • Knowledge of the organic/natural foods industry and/or local and sustainable food movements.
  • Knowledge of the care and maintenance of retail food store facilities.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Google suite, point-of-sale systems, QuickBooks, and general office technology.
  • Experience working with a Board of Directors
  • Experience with policy governance
  • Experience with strategic planning and articulating and carrying out the vision to meet the needs of the community and owners.
  • Experience working with diverse backgrounds and perspectives.
  • Working knowledge of social media advertising and promotional activities to increase Co-op engagement and promotional activities to increase Co-op engagement and ownership.

Work Environment and Physical Demands:

  • Work Environment: Work is performed primarily in a grocery store setting with extensive public/customer contact and may include frequent interruptions.
  • Physical Demands: Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in an office setting; to stand or sit for prolonged periods of time; to occasionally stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, reach, and twist; to lift, carry, push, and/or pull light to moderate amounts of weight; to operate office equipment requiring repetitive hand movement and fine coordination including use of a computer keyboard; and to verbally communicate to exchange information. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential job functions.

Salary and Benefits:

  • Salary: $95,000-$105,000
  • Benefits: employee discount, health insurance (including dental, vision, and life), paid breaks, paid time off, Health Reimbursement Arrangement (HRA), 401K
