ASAP – Controller / CFO (Interim)
3 days per week in downtown Chicago office (T,W,T) for local (Chicago) candidates only
2 days (M,F) WFH (remote)
Duration: 3 months
Pay Rate NTE $65 /hour
40 hours/week
This role will be supporting NFP's external audit. The ideal candidate for this role will be hands-on with audit experience and should be Controller/CFO level with 15-20 years of experience along with a strong background in not-for-profit accounting, affordable housing (HUD), construction accounting (including % of completion), Section 42 tax credits and real estate finance. They will have excellent leadership, communication, and analytical skills and be able to work effectively in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
Experience in managing an external audit
- Preparation: Prepare for the audit by gathering all relevant financial and operational data, including financial statements, policies and procedures, contracts, and other relevant documentation. Ensure that the data is accurate, up-to-date, and organized for easy access by the auditor.
- Communication: Clearly communicate the audit schedule and expectations to all stakeholders, including employees, board members, and senior management. Establish open lines of communication with the audit team to ensure a smooth and efficient audit process.
- Collaboration: Work closely with the auditor to identify potential risks and areas of focus for the audit. Provide timely responses to auditor requests and questions, and proactively address any issues or concerns that arise during the audit.
- Monitoring: Monitor the progress of the audit, keeping stakeholders informed of any changes or updates. Ensure that the auditor has access to the information they need to complete their work effectively.
- Closeout: After the audit is complete, review the auditor's findings and recommendations. Address any identified weaknesses or deficiencies in a timely manner, and implement any recommended changes to improve the organization's financial reporting processes and internal controls.
Experience Requirements: - Tax Credits and Affordable Housing: Ensure compliance with tax credit requirements and regulations, including low-income housing tax credits and historic tax credits. Manage the application and reporting process for affordable housing projects.
- Real Estate: Oversee the financial management of the company's real estate portfolio, including property management, leasing, and investment analysis.
- % of Completion: Ensure that the company's revenue recognition policies are in accordance with GAAP and that the % of completion method is properly applied to construction projects.
- HUD and NFP: Ensure compliance with HUD and NFP regulations, including the preparation and submission of required reports.
- Internal Controls: Establish and maintain effective internal controls to ensure the accuracy and reliability of financial information.
- Stakeholder Relations: Maintain strong relationships with stakeholders, including board members, auditors, bankers, and investors. Communicate financial information and results to stakeholders in a clear and concise manner.
- Team Management: Supervise a team of finance and accounting professionals, providing guidance, training, and feedback to help them reach their full potential.

- Evening and weekend work may be required as job duties demand
