What are the responsibilities and job description for the Paralegal position at Contact Government Services, LLC?
CGS is seeking a Paralegal to join our team supporting the legal mission of a large federal agency. This position will entail a wide range of legal services including research, drafting, document review, and litigation support.
Option for partial remote work may be available depending upon supervisor approval and project details.

Job functions may include:
- Based upon the general direction provided by the Assistant United States Attorney (AUSA) to whom a case is assigned, or the Chief of the Civil Decision, paralegal, assists with legal review, legal analysis, and substantive written response, to include dispositive motions, to various civil immigration lawsuits or other matters filed within the district.
- With oversight, draft pleadings, motions, briefs, and other papers related to civil
immigration topics that require minimal editing. Utilizing existing written guidelines for
reference.
- Experience with civil immigration litigation under the Administrative Procedures Act and/or litigation related to writs of mandamus is desirable.
- Perform legal research, using subscription based legal research websites, related to civil
immigration topics and trends that will be utilized in drafting pleadings, motions, briefs,
and other papers related to civil immigration topics.
- Be familiar with, or timely develop and understand civil immigration-related subject
matter including, from a general standpoint, federal court litigation related to “undue
delays.”
- Communicate with a variety of federal agencies regarding ongoing civil immigration
litigation in which the agency is a stakeholder and must participate in litigation.
- Multi-task and monitor several pending cases at any given time, keeping in mind
applicable deadlines.
- Assists trial staff in coordination with expert witnesses and litigation consultants.
- Arranges for access to appropriate DOJ libraries and other legal research facilities.
- Coordinates with other Contractor support components, including data processing support
staff, in order to accomplish work. Assists attorneys in courtroom when required.
- Uses established systems, processes, and procedures for tracking, controlling, and
managing case files, exhibits, and other case specific materials.
- Requires sound working knowledge of federal and state court system, legal research
procedures, and legal research resources. Requires excellent written and oral
communication skills and thorough knowledge of legal research tools such as LEXIS and
Westlaw.
- Must have hands-on familiarity with a variety of computer applications,
including word processing, databases (such as document review and file management
systems), spreadsheets, imaging, and hardware systems.
- Role also requires hands-on familiarity with ESI tools and knowledge of eDiscovery
procedures and resources. Ability to consistently deliver highest quality work under
extreme pressure will be very important.
- Perform tasks as assigned by the Civil Chief to meet the needs and mission of the Civil Unit.
- Perform general office procedures including, but not limited to: establish and maintain a variety of civil files, documents and databases, assemble documents and other information for the case file and retention in accordance with established procedures and Department of Justice regulations.
- Establish and maintain calendar and/or database of active and pending cases/appearances; track hearings, trial dates, grand jury and scheduling conferences to assist the assigned AUSA where requested.
- Perform other logistical related duties as required/assigned.
Skills, Attributes, and Qualities for success:
- Knowledge of Federal and State Court Systems and experience working within them.
- Good communication skills, ability to effectively express knowledge, opinions, and recommendations.
- Provide word processing and data entry/retrieval.
- Ability to review and analyze data and information from multiple sources, specifically utilizing law databases like Lexis Nexis, Westlaw, Pacer, etc.
- Ability to establish case/project files.
- Ability to enter and retrieve data from databases.
- Ability to prepare and format management reports.
- Ability to manipulate, transfer, compute and print information.
- Ability to prepare and correct reports and correspondence using word processing software.
- Schedule appointments.
- Answer inquiries regarding case-related information as maintained in the database.
Ideally, you will also have:
- High school Diploma
- 2-4 year paralegal degree or certificate, or equivalent program study.
- JD or current law school enrollment is favorable but not a requirement.
- Three to five years of progressively more responsible experience in litigation support.
