JOB TITLE: Doula TERM/FTE: Full time, 210 work days
LOCATION: Any CASE Worksite DEPARTMENT: Glenbard Parents as Teachers
REPORTS TO: Prevention Initiative Program Supervisor

Position Summary:
The Prevention Initiative Doula will implement the community-based doula program as a part of the Parents as Teachers home visiting program, emphasizing parent-child interaction, developmental parenting, and attention to family well-being, even before a child is born. The Doula will engage with the family alongside the family’s Home Visitor, for intensive services, usually starting prenatally during the third trimester of pregnancy until at least 2-3 months postpartum. The
Doula will collaborate with the family and community resources to deliver services in culturally and linguistically sensitive ways, including offering community outreach, facilitating prenatal education activities, and assisting families in preparing for childbirth, being present during labor and delivery, and supporting the postpartum period.

Position Requirements:

  • Experience working with families with young children, preferred
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Experience working with culturally and linguistically diverse families
  • Must have reliable transportation, valid driver’s license, proof of auto insurance, and ability to drive to multiple locations, primarily in, but sometimes outside of, DuPage Co area, 24/7 when on call
  • Must be willing to have flexible work hours, including nights, weekends, holidays when on call

Certification, Licensure, Training:

  • Bachelor’s Degree minimum (or equivalent), human service-related fields such as social work, early childhood education, psychology, or other healthcare preferred
  • Bilingual Spanish or other language preferred
  • Home Visiting or other related experience preferred
  • Parents as Teachers model certification preferred

Job Responsibilities:

  • Identify, recruit, and enroll pregnant moms for the doula component of the GPAT home visiting program
  • Provide information, education, and resources that will prepare the parent and her family for the birth process
  • Attend and support the mother, her family, and/or support person(s) throughout the birth process
  • Assist in increasing the family’s ability to advocate for themselves, during the birth process and beyond
  • Assist family to establish their own goals related to pregnancy, labor, delivery, and the post-partum period and create a birth plan for accomplishing these goals
  • Assist parents with infant feeding and basic infant care postpartum, including initiating and strengthening the parent-child relationship
  • Work collaboratively with GPAT Home Visitors before, during, and after the doula portion of the program
  • Prepare individualized visits, maintaining written documentation of all activities and contact with families and contacts made on behalf of the participant families
  • Provide perinatal education and support in group settings as a sole facilitator or as a co-facilitator
  • Provide community education and outreach within the medical clinic/hospital communities as necessary, maintaining a positive relationship with community agencies and medical professionals
  • Attend required Doula based trainings
  • Be flexible and available to parent’s schedule for visits, and available 24/7 when on call for labor/delivery
  • Be sensitive and respectful to culture, linguistic and developmental differences
  • Participate in regular reflective supervision, monthly case consultation, and GPAT team meetings
  • Keep an accurate calendar of activities in our shared outlook calendar
  • Other duties as assigned

Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to:

  • Sit, stand, talk and hear for extended periods of time, operate electronic equipment; and reach with hands and arms and will repeat actions with the same hand, arm, or finger motion; have vision abilities required include close vision, and the ability to adjust focus (the ability to withstand long-term use of computer devices is required)
  • Drive a car (does not include transportation of families being served)
  • Climb stairs, ambulate in and out of site locations in all weather
  • Lift and hold up to approximately 20 lbs., including bending and reaching
  • To meet work deadlines with severe time constraints, interacting with the public and staff, within irregular or extended work hours, often in family’s homes

Work Environment:
The noise level in the work environment varies from an office setting where it is typically low, to family homes, hospital settings, or outreach events where the noise level may be louder and not within the employee’s control to change
Work is usually conducted indoors. Outdoor assignments may be part of this position. The work could be conducted in any part of the GPAT/CASE boundaries, and in hospital and clinic settings potentially outside of DuPage County.

Employee Performance Evaluation:
Standard operating practice is to conduct job performance evaluations for this job annually using criteria defined by the
CASE Board, member school districts, applicable collective bargaining agreements, and the Illinois State Board of
Education (where appropriate).
