Scope of position: applying knowledge of glass and ceramics composition/properties, mineralogy and crystallography to effectively analyze, identify, and describe the crystallization and defect propensity of Corning Inc products. This corporate engineering role serves all businesses. Team members support projects ranging from initial research through stage 5 manufacturing. The organization serves a flexible base of resources and knowledge which facilitates rapid solution development and emphasizes strong technical competence. A team of microscopy and mineralogy experts, they investigate process and product interactions in glass & ceramic research, development, and manufacturing. Day to Day Responsibilities: • Understand microscopic defects and material properties and their impact on Corning’s products and processes • Drive root cause understanding to improve yield, extend asset life, reduce costs, improve product attributes and enable new products • Develop laboratory testing regimen and process simulations to extend knowledge base and prove/disprove hypotheses • Manage workload to ensure optimal turnaround and experimental efficiency • Protect Corning’s intellectual property by filing invention disclosures for patent application in timely fashion as applicable • Document all results in internal, structured reports • Maintain high quality engineering principles, including the use of statistics, structured problem solving methods and regimented analytical protocols • Measure and communicate performance against objectives In addition to the managerial function, this position includes working as a technical contributor on projects, as well as a member of the Materials/Melting/Mineralogy, Materials Engineering, Metallurgy, and Thermal Process Engineering staffs, and of the Thermal & Materials Engineering extended staff. Travel Requirements: 10-15%, project based, some international Hours of work/work schedule/flex-time: Flex time; typical 8:00 – 5:00; Monday – Friday. Some projects may require additional hours. Required Skills: • Strong communication skills to enable collaboration with scientists, engineers, and technicians • Ability to assimilate quickly and produce valuable results • Demonstrated strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build relationships with customers, suppliers, and co-workers • Problem solving skills. Some experience in lab testing design. • Some experience in the fields of crystallization, glass research, development or manufacturing. • Familiar with Engineering Excellence tool and comfortable engaging with project work Desired Skills: • Functional management experience • Glass, ceramics, process engineering basics • Hands on experience (SEM, EDX, optical microscopy , etc.) and knowledge of microscopic lab tools (microprobe, SIMS, ICPMS, FTIR, etc. • Desire to work in a lab environment • Statistics, data analysis, design of experiments • Innovative and creative • Strong multi-tasker • Business savvy and competence Soft Skills: • Strong communication skills, able to work across boundaries at all levels of the organization • Ability to influence, guide, and mentor • Able to foster a diverse and inclusive environment built on credibility, transparency, openness, and trust • Flexible and adaptable • Strong networking skills • Able to work independently as well as be part of a team or lead a team • Sense of urgency • Results oriented • Positive attitude Education and Experience: • Technical degree(BS, MS or PhD) – materials, glass, or ceramic engineering, geology or similar. • 2 years experience in materials or process engineering or related fields; high degree of technical competence This role does not support immigration sponsorship.
