Title: Parks Trail Technician

Department: Parks and Recreation

Reports To: Parks and Rec Operations Coordinator

Location: 1257 County Farm Rd. Bedford, VA 24523

Hours: Monday - Friday, 8:30am - 5:00pm, weekends as needed

Position Summary

Performs trail and trailhead maintenance and assessment of trail conditions for the purposes of determining facility status, sustainability, and safety; does related work as required. Also leads in the construction and maintenance of sustainable natural surface trails throughout Bedford County Parks and is responsible for day-to-day maintenance of existing trails and skills areas. Work is performed under regular supervision.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Plans trail projects, prioritize jobs, and secures adequate equipment and tools to assure projects can be satisfactorily completed.

Working with local trail volunteers and clubs volunteers and clubs, selects seasonal and annual agency-wide work.

Implements the assigned trail and park operations plans.

Monitors overall Bedford County Parks and Recreation trail areas for proper and/or unauthorized use; determines trail conditions and communicates to his/her supervisor regarding public notification of trail use status.

Clears and constructs new trail and reroutes exists trails, determines the layout and design of such trails.

Leads the construction of trail structures such as bridges, staircases, fences, retaining walls and boardwalks.

Serves as the construction and site leader of any volunteer trail projects with Bedford County Parks.

Maintain knowledge of industry (IMBA) best practices for sustainable trails building and maintenance.

Conducts staff training in sustainable trail design, building, and maintenance.

Operates mowers, tractors, dump truck and hand tools in performance of tasks.

Accomplishes all tasks as appropriately assigned or requested by management.

Participates in employee meetings and training as needed.

Performs special projects as assigned.

Consistently demonstrates ability to respond to changing situations in a flexible manner in order to meet current needs, and reprioritizes work as necessary.

Qualifications

Education / Experience

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school and some experience as a semiskilled worker in grounds maintenance. Working knowledge of sustainable trail building, hiking, cycling, mountain biking and maintenance preferred. Must have intermediate skill level with the internet and Microsoft computer applications including SharePoint, Outlook, Excel and Word. First Aid, Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) is required and Wilderness First Aid training is preferred.

Knowledge / Skills / Abilities

General knowledge of the use of common hand and specialized power tools; general knowledge of the safe use and operation and preventive maintenance of equipment used in landscaping and grounds maintenance; skill in the use of equipment to which assigned; ability to perform labor for extended periods, often under unfavorable weather conditions; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates. Ability to teach, mentor, and inspire crew.

Certifications / Licenses

Possession of an appropriate driver's license valid in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Possession or ability to obtain a pesticide applicator’s license valid in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

This is medium work requiring exertion in excess of 50 pounds of force occasionally, in excess of 20 pounds of force frequently, and in excess of 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects; work requires climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, use of measuring devices, operation of machines, operation of motor vehicles or equipment, and determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work.

Environmental Factors

The worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, extreme cold, extreme heat, noise, vibration, hazards, atmospheric conditions, and oils.

Special/ Additional Requirements

Subject to a complete criminal history background search and drug screening with acceptable results.
