Job Posting for LTE Forest Technician at County of Jackson
Jackson County Forestry and Parks Department is now accepting applications for a Limited Term Employee (LTE) Forest Technician. The LTE Forest Technician duties include, but are not limited to: treating invasive species, forest reconnaissance, regeneration surveys. At times, technician may work with foresters in marking trees for timber sales, scaling cut timber, delineating timber types and developing management prescriptions for timber stands. Work week is Monday through Thursday 6am to 4pm. Roughly 40 hours per week and lasting approximately four (4) months; starting by the end of May.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Assists with the administration and supervision of timber sales on the county forest. Reports contract violations and damage assessments to the sale administrator. Receives payment for timber stumpage and accounts for the same
Oversees sphagnum moss operations including sale setup, contract compliance, revenue collection and keeping records of performance of contractors
Operates, maintains and repairs heavy equipment including: bulldozer, road grader, end loader, wheeled tractor, dump truck, and other equipment as directed. Maintains records of repairs and costs to equipment
Fights forest fires with hand tools and/or heavy equipment in hazardous conditions and completes annual training as required
Assists in establishing cutting boundaries along private property
Conducts or directs surveys for tree survival, insect damage and endangered species
Coordinates and assists with surveillance of wood removal from sale areas as necessary. Maintains accountability for forest products removed from County forest
Oversees seasonal or contracted forestry field crews in area of expertise
Cooperates with parks and trails staff to meet overall program needs
Works with other county governments, agencies and groups in a friendly and cooperative manner
Demonstrates good judgment and fairness in dealing with contractors and the public
Qualifications: Must be enrolled or have obtained a bachelor’s degree in forestry program or related natural resources field. Knowledge of dendrology, silviculture, aerial photograph interpretation, land navigation preferred; and the ability to work in varied terrain and under adverse weather conditions. Must possess a valid driver’s license and be at least 18 years of age.KNOLWEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED TO PERFORM JOB
Knowledge of principles of G.I.S. and forestry related computer applications
Working knowledge of forest management principles, silviculture and timber types common to Jackson County
Knowledge and ability to use of computers, GPS equipment and common forestry tools
Skills and ability to operate a variety of forest management equipment, including but not limited to pickups, heavy trucks, ATV, snowmobile, tractors, skidder, fire control equipment and sprayers
Skills and ability to operate a variety of shop tools including: band saw, drill press, welders, plasma cutters and other metal fabrication tools
Ability to read and interpret documents, and laws in the English language
Ability to listen to and understand information and ideas in spoken and written format so individuals may effectively understand and convey communications
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals
Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form
Inductive and deductive reasoning – ability to combine separate pieces of information, or specific answers to problems, to form general rules or conclusions; includes coming up with a logical explanation for why a series of seemingly unrelated events occur together and deciding if an answer makes sense
