Job Summary As a med-surg nurse, you will be responsible for caring for patients preparing for, and recovering from, surgical procedures. Under the direction of a physician, you will develop individual patient care plans based on health history and current symptoms and presentation. You will ensure surgical patient safety and comfort by regularly checking vitals, administering medications, providing wound care, monitoring equipment operation (such as IVs, catheters, and oxygen tanks), and running diagnostic tests as needed. You will notify the physician of any notable changes or causes for concern. You will also communicate regularly with the patient and family members to promote comfort, confidence, and full postoperative recovery. This job entails a high level of responsibility for the safety of patients and staff. You must have a detailed understanding of nursing ethics and professional practice standards, relevant state regulations, and hospital policies. An RN must also possess excellent communication, critical thinking, organizational, and computer skills.
