Provide clerical and secretarial services to the nursing unit assigned.

Responsibilities
- Carries out the secretarial and clerical duties necessary for the efficient functioning of the nursing unit assigned.
- Communicates patient requests promptly to the nursing staff;
- Orders and charges for supplies and equipment;
- Schedules procedures and examinations with appropriate departments;
- Notifies consults when ordered (physicians, classes, etc.);
- Maintains the patient record and efficiently operates the computer system;
- Processes patient classification data either manually or via computer.
- Removes medications from the delivery system and promptly gives to the appropriate nursing staff;
- NON-ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education/Knowledge/Skills:
Applicants who have either 1) successfully completed a unit secretary (HUC) course, or 2) have a minimum of one year recent unit secretary (HUC) experience in a hospital setting, will be given preference. As an alternative to the aforementioned preferences, a HUC must successfully complete a Health Unit Coordinator Curriculum as assigned by the Employer within two weeks of hire as a HUC. Must be able to read with comprehension and write legibly. Must be proficient in use of proper grammar. Must have knowledge of:
- Medical terminology
- Hospital policies and procedures
- Infection control
- Fire and safety regulations
Experience:
Secretarial or clerical experience is desired. Previous hospital experience is desired.
Licensure Certification:
Certification in basic life support (CPR) may be required when the unit secretary works in a department where he/she is subject to assignment as a first responder to a cardiopulmonary arrest victim.
