To help us achieve this, we are seeking a Newsletter Editor to develop and execute growth and engagement strategies for and within the AJC's suite of 20 editorial newsletters. This role will lead a team of newsletter producers to create strategic, best-in-class email experiences that rise to the news cycle in creative, authentic ways that also drive business goals. The Newsletter Editor will exhibit strong content and presentation editing skills that reflect a deep understanding of how free and paid audiences consume news, and be able to teach and develop skills sets of producers on the team.
This position will lead efforts to test, measure and iterate on a variety of strategies to build audience and increase engagement in and around the email space, with a strong emphasis on results and both qualitative and quantitative metrics-driven decision making.
In this position you will:
* Own the strategy for distribution and formatting of AJC's content across the AJC's newsletters with the goal of increasing full-funnel engagement
* Analyze metrics and trends to identify opportunities to improve newsletter distribution and experience
* Monitor and stay up to date on external competitive developments and best practices to ensure AJC remains competitive and present in the email space
* Partner across AJC's organization to influence and inform editorial, content, and other activities within newsletters to ensure best practices are employed and are aligned to what works for the AJC identity and audience
* Identify and pursue content development around newsletters as standalone experiences
* Manage an enthusiastic team of newsletter producers with the goal of making each send a hit with the identified audience
* Work with editors and newsroom leaders to plan content and presentation
* Work with digital leaders to develop strategy for growing the top of funnel for our subscriptions
* Work with digital producers, editors and writers on innovative packages and new ways of storytelling on external platforms
* Test and develop strategies to promote the overall growth and engagement on our platforms
* Partner with Brand, Growth and Retention Marketing on aligning editorial and organic strategies with any paid campaigns
Qualifications:
What we expect you to have to be ready:
* At least 6 years of experience with at least 1 year of experience as a team lead, coach, or manager of people in a fast-paced operational role OR MS 4 years of experience and 1 year leadership OR 10 years with no degree.
* Experience in newsletters as a key to converting across the funnel, including increasing reader engagement and building brand
* Knowledge on the most recent trends in digital news media and owned platforms
* Ability to nurture talent and identify key hires to accomplish company goals
* An ability to take and give constructive criticism
* Passion and belief in local, regional and statewide journalism and its role as a societal change agent
* Familiarity and experience in using audience metrics to drive tactical as well as strategic decisions on content production and resource allocation
* Understanding of journalism standards and media ethics
* Reliable automobile transportation required.
* Reliable internet service for remote work environment required.
* Ability to work weekend and unusual hours as dictated by news events
Preferred Experience in one or more of the following:
* Newspapers, magazines, media, technology, or related field
* Newsletters, audience, interactive, or digital media
Education:
* Bachelor's degree preferably in journalism, product development, or related field. Direct experience in a similar role may be substituted for education.
While this position allows the opportunity to work from home, it will be based in metro Atlanta and the editor will be expected to be onsite in our Atlanta office on a regular basis.
