Purpose/Introduction
The Laboratory Superintendent manages and directs the laboratory team (7 hourly technicians, 3 salaried professionals), supporting all units at the Borger Plant. This key role in the technical organization supports both plant process and quality control, as well as assisting in troubleshooting of plant processes through analytical testing and interpretation of results. In addition, the laboratory superintendent has responsibility to ensure off-hour coverage of specialized analyses (testing) to meet business needs. The laboratory superintendent directs implementation/adherence to the laboratory chemical hygiene plan, critical to the safety and reliability of the laboratory and personnel. This position manages expense and capital budget budgets for the laboratory. The successful candidate works closely with plant operations, process engineering, and project engineering to provide technical expertise needed to meet the economic, reliability, environmental and safety objectives of the facility as well as commercial to support new product development, including testing and/or reporting requirements.
Responsibilities
- Direct management of laboratory personnel (both hourly and salaried).
- Oversight of QA/QC testing and ensuring reporting of accurate and timely results.
- Oversight of laboratory chemical hygiene plan and implementation.
- Oversight of a rigorous statistical process control program to ensure method performance and accuracy of results for all laboratory testing.
- Management of special projects requiring development of new testing and/or training of laboratory personnel to meet business needs.
- Interface with multiple organizational levels in manufacturing and commercial groups.
- Working outside normal business hours (including weekends) as needed to provide support as business need dictates.
- QA/QC and specialized testing support for plant operations personnel as well as solving technical problems.
- Data evaluation to provide insight on proposed specification changes to products and process capability to meet.
Responsibilities (continued)
- Management of laboratory expense budget and capital budget development for laboratory instrument/equipment succession planning.
- Supports optimization efforts to improve plant safety, profitability, and efficiency.
- Reviews and manages the documentation review and adherence of laboratory SOPs.
- Review and adherence to laboratory chemical hygiene plan including ensuring designation of the chemical hygiene officer and chemical hygiene audits are performed, deficiencies identified and resolved in a timely manner.
- Supports site with off hour call-out duty on rotation of nights and weekends with laboratory team
- Evaluates and champions emerging technologies and testing as business need dictates
- Plans, prioritizes, coordinates and aligns the work group's activities to ensure that effective laboratory support is provided to all the units at the Borger plant
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in engineering or science related field with a minimum of 4 years of experience in laboratory analysis and/or Quality Assurance
- Ability to manage multiple competing priorities
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Strong organization and system development/deployment capabilities
- Strong customer focus and results driven
- Ability to develop and lead independent research projects
Preferred Qualifications
- Petrochemicals/refinery experience
- Experience with Gas Chromatography FID/SCD/TCD), GC/MS, ICP/OES, ICP/MS
- Experience with Acid/base titration, flash point and automatic distillation testing, X-Ray Florescence and/or UV-VIS spectroscopy
- Experience with laboratory information management systems (LIMS)
