Purpose/Introduction
We are seeking a Rail Attendant to join our team at our Pasadena Plastics Complex in Pasadena, Texas. The primary role of this position is to move rail cars safely in the yards and over the road, assemble and break down trains by adding and removing railroad cars.
Responsibilities
- Climb ladders to tops of cars to set brakes.
- Connect air hoses to cars, using wrenches. Inspect couplings, air hoses, journal boxes, and handbrakes to ensure that they are securely fastened and functioning properly. Make minor repairs to couplings, air hoses.
- Observe signals from other crewmembers so that work activities can be coordinated.
- Pull or push track switches to re-route cars.
- Raise levers to couple and uncouple cars for makeup and breakup of trains.
- Receive oral or written instructions from Yardmasters or his designee or other rail employee’s indicating track assignments and cars to be switched.
- Ride on outside of moving rail cars in approved positions.
- Signal locomotive engineers to start or stop trains when coupling or uncoupling cars, using hand signals, lanterns, or radio communication.
- Inspect tracks, cars, and engines for defects and to determine service needs.
Responsibilities (continued)
- Monitor oil, air, and steam pressure gauges, and make sure water levels are adequate.
- Operate and drive locomotives, diesel switch engines.
- Record numbers of cars available.
- Refuel engines, add crank case, governor and compressor oil.
- Inspect equipment, structures, or materials to identify the cause of errors or other problems or defects.
- Identify information by categorizing, estimating, recognizing differences or similarities, and detecting changes in circumstances or events.
- Able to cooperate within a group to work together to accomplish tasks.
- Identify underlying principles, reasons, or facts of information by breaking down information or data into separate parts.
- Work is outdoors in all weather conditions – including snow, ice, rain, cold and heat.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED.
- At least 1 year of locomotive operation experience OR rail car switching experience.
- Must follow safety guidelines, posted bulletins, regulations, SOP’s, and switch lists.
- Must be able to operate a computer.
- Must be able to compare numbers.
- Must be able to solve problems quickly and safely and react to changing conditions on the job.
- Ability to perform physical activities that require considerable use of the arms and legs and functional whole-body movements such as climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, and handling of tools and equipment.
Preferred Qualifications
- 2 years of locomotive operation experience OR rail car switching experience.
