Position Summary:
- The laborer is responsible for preparing and cleaning underground utility construction sites, loading and unloading materials to be used, hand digging in trenches and filling potholes, some operating of equipment and machines, and helping skilled workers with their duties. This position supports the underground utilities construction team and works with other team members within the department.
- As a laborer, daily work will involve placement of fiber optic and copper or power cables, conduits, enclosures, vaults, cabinets, poles and related equipment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Prepare the work site, including cleaning and removing debris and possible hazards.
- Assists the skilled worker, such as operator, locator, or foremen in completing their skilled tasks effectively and efficiently.
- Identify utilities and watch dig crew dig to prevent utility hits.
- Maintains every piece of equipment, such as daily maintenance of machines (oil, grease, water, etc.) and restocking trucks with supplies to ensure the crews have the proper tools and supplies to complete the job.
- Digs trenches and fills potholes.
- Wears all the appropriate safety apparel and follows all established safety practices and procedures.
- May be required to work overtime, including evening hours, weekends, and possible travel to out-of-town assignments.
Success Factors/job competencies
- Ability to work in a variety of physical positions to include lifting heavy objects, walk and stand for long periods of time, and perform strenuous physical labor under adverse field conditions.
- Ability to learn and understand utility locates and read construction drawings
- Ability to learn and gain knowledge of proper use of equipment, materials, and supplies used in telecom work.
- Ability to learn and gain knowledge of first aid and applicable safety precautions.
- Ability to communicate orally and in writing.
- Ability to work independently and complete daily activities according to work schedule.
- Ability to understand, follow, and transmit written and oral instructions.
- Ability to meet attendance schedule with dependability and consistency.
Qualifications required:
- High School Diploma and/or equivalent.
- Valid Driver’s License
- Minimum 1 year experience in a construction laboring or physically laboring position.
Qualifications preferred:
- Class A CDL Driver’s License.
- 1 year’s industry experience (i.e., underground utility construction)
Working Conditions / Environment: This position operates in a field environment. This role routinely requires the ability to work in a variety of physical positions, including sitting, standing, walking, bending, squatting, lifting, twisting, pushing, pulling, and kneeling.
The physical demands described in this job description represent those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the job. This position is labor intensive, with lifting required. Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus. Regular exposure to all weather conditions, especially hot, humid and/or rainy spring, summer, and fall weather.
Assume responsibility for work outcomes and results of other workers. May be exposed to uncomfortable or distracting sounds or noise levels on sites of projects being managed or coordinated. When working onsite, will be required to wear common protective of safety equipment, such as safety glasses, gloves, hearing protection, hard hats, and safety vest.
